20. Since i don't know most of what Obama knows i can't defend it but i can offer my view
Or rather, one of my views and the views of another poster.

As i wrote in another post: The only way to permanently shut this issue down would be for the supreme court to rule against Obama gaining this power. And in all seriousness, what do people think would happen if Obama announced that he would be 'protecting' warrantless wiretaps for the purpose of having the supreme court close the door on him?(getting it shut down this way would also prevent any future republicans from trying to gain this power)

Somebody pointed out that the current supremes don't really care about the privacy of citizens(which i would agree with) but i am also of the belief they would NOT want Obama to have the power.

Another possibility that was mentioned by another poster in another thread was this:

An Ongoing Lawsuit From The Bush Admin. In Which DOJ Is Defending (Ex)Gov't Employees

Everyone is entitled to a defense. The defense attorney's, assigned by DOJ are defending their case. That's what they are supposed to do.

Obama interfering would be politicization of DOJ. This is what Bushies did. Obama does not and will not politicize DOJ. The case needs to work it's way through the court, and as much as it SOUNDS bad, the defense is doing what defense attorney's do. Filing motions to try to win their case.

Which of these are more likely I'm uncertain off, but i consider both to be sensible reasons

36. It is not encumbent on Obama to interfere in the ongoing case
against Bush appointees! Does everybody get that?

The second post you quoted is from Beetwasher at # 5 in this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x8324890#8324973

Anyone who wants a better understanding of the situation, please also read post # 14 on the same thread.

I keep repeating myself: As president, Obama is not in a position to interfere in many ongoing disputes. If he did, his actions would be unconstitutional.

51. Excuse me but when Bush left Bush stopped being the defendant in these suits
Obama is now the defendant he's not fighting for (ex)Bush officials he's fighting for his own administration. He is in a position to change the rationale for the defense. He's choosing not to do so.

Regards

29. Reason...that is so rare to find on this site.
People take half truths from what they hear and assume it's all the facts. This was the same when people said O was a homophobe and basically supported Prop 8 and then it came out that he spoke against it early on and still nothing was done. Over and over and over again....people run at the mouth when there could be something else we're not privy too. I'll also wait.

Thanks for your post. Way too uncommon.

48. except that yesterday Obama repeated his
opposition to equal rights for GLBT people, and said he opposed the Vermont ruling. And he did not 'speak againt' Prop 8, he wrote a letter to a small group about it. The Yes ON 8 folks had available to them loads of tape of Obama saying clearly that he opposes marriage equality, a thing he said again yesterday, as his way of celebrating the Vermont victory, he had to say he personally does not accept equal rights for all.
Facts are facts. Obama says over and over again that he thinks marriage is only for straights. Deal with that. He says it is because of his religion. Deal with it.

Am I, someone well to the Left of Dennis, "disappointed"? After 8 looong years of Bush, Cheney, & Halliburton, my disappointment sensors have been SCORCHED, and down to the roots! Hopefully, they'll regenerate, but it may require several more years.

Attributed to Sen. Al Franken (D, MN): "What do we want? PATIENCE! When do we want it? NOW!"

I think back to how many times, he's been one step ahead of everyone else, but in a DIFFERENT manner...he's an uncommon man, with an uncommon mind, and a totally uncommon way of doing things...I will wait and see what he's up too...I just wish there wasn't so much hysteria being perpetrated...

I've seen so many rants against Obama, based on words that were misunderstood, or taken out of context, or simple disinformation here/there and everywhere, that I sometimes wonder who's behind it, and is it deliberate?....wb

some are partisan "team" cheerleaders. Issues don't matter except as campaign talking points. What matters is "winning" elections and holding power, regardless of how much we lose when we elect a candidate whose agenda conflicts with traditional party values.

53. I can't defend it, I think it's simply a terrible policy.
However, Obama has shown that he is always a few moves ahead of his competition. Maybe **crosses fingers** he is defending this wiretapping shit to expose it from a different angle. Maybe he is going to use it as some sort of legal avenue against someone of high profile (like DICK) and let them spill the beans about it, making the Rushpublicans look even worse for having introduced and implemented it under Bush's reign.

I don't know, that sounds pretty far fetched.

I think it is a piece of shit legislation, and I'm disappointed in President Obama for his support of it.
