Buy the dress that Michelle Obama wore on the cover of Essense (and it's affordable too)

http://www1.talbots.com/talbotsonline/index.aspx

And right now Talbot's has it for 25% off the regular price of $170.

I wear Talbot's - they have nice clothes in my size (I'm a big girl) and they even have the dress in my size too.

Why can't our first lady be someone who is one of us instead of better than us?

1. Excellent point
Thoughts from Ms. goclark....

It also sends such a positive message to women.

IT's not how much your clothes cost it's how gracious you are when you wear them.
Yes, fit matters and other things but it is not the Dior that makes a lady look special.

2. I hate that one of us stuff.
I don't want "one of us". I want someone who damn well is better than the average person.

7. I'd have to disagree
I mean she is an amazing person which I guess in some ways makes her better than the average person. But she is also someone who I can identify with - she doesn't dress with uber expensive designer clothes but from stores where any of us can go shopping. There is a Talbot's down the road from me and I could wear nice clothes just like Michelle.

What's wrong with that?

8. I like knowing that a wonderful professional wardrobe is available
for a reasonable price when those items go on sale. I've worn Talbots before, and loved it. Everything is well-made and out of good fabric.

Michelle Obama dresses well without flying to Paris for haute couture. Her clothes fit her well and look great on her. At a time of economic stress, it's nice that she isn't flaunting spending alot of money on herself.

10. I'm with you -- I want smarter, kinder, wiser, and experienced.
I am very pleased with the current First Family.

The previous ones were a national embarrassment. Why he wasn't impeached the instant the "sit there looking like an idiot on 9/11 while the country was under attack" videos were out is a complete mystery to me.

Above average pricetags on clothing? That I don't care about.

28. I think it is obvious in the OP's context that she isn't talking about intellect
education etc.

It isn't that difficult a concept cali...yes, we want someone better than the average person in terms of intelligence, education etc. But, I am quite fine with a first lady who doesn't feel the need to wear 500,000 dollar dresses etc. as some sort of snobbish fashion symbol...

11. Yes, you can.
Just don't let the hem be any longer than below your knee. Knees are actually not a pretty feature. Dresses cut right through the middle of the knees, or right below the knee, are more elegant than above the knee. It also shows less leg when crossing them. For example, when Michelle crossed her legs in that raspberry frock she wore in France a little too much leg was exposed. Carla Bruni only crossed her ankles, which is more appropriate in a professional setting. Take it from someone who had the misfortune to have to attend etiquette classes. LOL!!!

19. It depends.
There's a place and time for everything. Showing too much leg, or any other body part, is not always appropriate. At least not in a professional setting.

herself properly in all settings. I know it's hard to take. You'll be okay.

21. I never said that she didn't.
Only that one has to be careful not to show too much leg when the dress is above the knees. I have no beef with her, I think that she's doing a good job as First Lady.

:D

Is the passive-aggressive winky face to let everyone know that you aren't actually making a snide remark about Michelle by hinting she is classless?

Carla Bruni only crossed her ankles, which is more appropriate in a professional setting.
That is very nice that Crala Bruni gets these important niceties. Pity she was stupid enough to marry a complete asshole like Sarkozy. But, it is nice that she crosses her ankles and not her legs.

25. The dress is available in petites.
Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 04:08 PM by amandabeech
Talbots has some stores devoted entirely to petites, and they have a very large petite selection in their on line catalog.

I sometimes need a petite jacket because I'm very short waisted, and Talbots petites fit me well.

14. Women used to wear dresses ALL the time. This does seem to be the year of the dress..
I'm going to try on a few, and I haven't worn dresses in ages. There are cute ones at every price point and many of them wouldn't look out of place at the grocery store or the library. They would look good there, or anywhere, even if you stay at home. And they are easy, put one on and you are pretty much good to go. I remember when I thought I wouldn't wear cropped pants because I am short...and round. Now, I wear them all spring, summer and fall.

I think I'm talking myself into this. :)

5. Still way too expensive for me. It is nice and a lot more affordable than
high designers clothes, but it is still too highly priced for many people. It is not a criticism of Michelle Obama, just a comment because you say it is affordable.

6. That is so cool! But since I'm not working out of the home, I will continue to sew
Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 09:42 AM by Ilsa
alot of what I wear. I don't sew my blue jeans, but I sew alot of cotton tops for myself for summer, and pantsuits, etc. I'm sewing baby clothes for a gift to the neighbor who had a baby in Feb. I saved tons of money that way.

I love the blue rose dress. My favorite is the black and white sundress she wore on The View last summer.

9. Yikes 170.....
I would never spend that much on a dress that wasn't a formal gown for a very special event.

I can't imagine have so much money that that would seem like a good deal....

15. I consider Talbot's a fairly expensive store.
Someone bought me a sweater from there that I wasn't crazy about, so I exchanged it for a pair of black jeans at the same price- $75.

I would NEVER spend $75 on a pair of jeans- or a sweater.

But considering how much most first ladies spend on their wardrobes- yes, it IS cheap.

Expensive would be Hermes, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, etc.

Talbot's is not too bad and they have sales.

Talbot's is not too pricey. A silk fringed scarf from Hermes is more than some people's weekly salary (over $600.00).

26. I don't consider us wealthy on our retirement income but I
could easily fit the purchase in our budget if I wanted to. It isn't out of line with what I paid for work clothes before I retired or what I've purchased since for special events.

I'm just happier in jeans and birks and don't dress up unless I really need to.

would wear it is difficult. Talbot's has good quality items and they often run sales. There is even an outlet store on line where you can pick up bargains.
