ASU stiffs Obama, claims too inexperienced for honorary degree
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dawn-teo/asu-stiffs-obama-claim-to_b_185296.html

TEMPE, ARIZONA - Universities typically confer an honorary degree on commencement speakers, particularly those who have reached the pinnacle of their career or achieved the top of their field. Arizona State University (ASU), though, says it will not confer an honorary degree on this year's commencement speaker, President Barack Obama, because "his body of work is yet to come."

...

Yeah, what's he ever done? Confounded all experts and won the Democratic nomination. Elected president. Started off his administration like gangbusters. Sure, just not enough "eminence." Just not up to AZU standards.

Hmm, Arizona -- now what was that Arizona connection with Obama. Seems like it was last summer and fall, or sometime. Hmm.

LOL!

1. What losers!
Are they going to honor their Senator "Gong Show" McCain instead for a Golden Turkey award???

9. Losers, indeed. This is almost good news, as President Obama
won't have to muddy up his wall of degrees with a meaningless one from a third, maybe fourth?, tier school.

Whatev.

3. Isn't Arizona the state that put McCain in the Senate?
Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 04:49 PM by JayMusgrove
And kept him there for all these years?

Yeah, no honorary degree for Obama, did they already give one to McCain?

I bet Harvard will give Obama one in a year or two.

21. I thought I heard on Morning Joe
today that Notre Dame was going to give him one. Bad move on ASU's part. IF they are smart they will reconsider.

24. WTF should he care? He earned REAL degrees with REAL grades.
He's speaking to honor the students that worked hard to graduate. He's not doing it for the honorary degree.

Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 05:20 PM by mwei924
Obama is a graduate for Columbia and Harvard. So he doesn't get an honorary degree from a lousy school. Big whoop. He probably wouldn't put an ASU degree next to his Ivies anyways.

15. Here's a list of their past honorary degree recipients ... Blake Edwards anyone?
Hey, I liked the Pink Panther movies, too. But his resume doesn't seem particularly more accomplished than that of the President of the United States.

Or how about the vice-minister of education in the People's Republic of China? (not the minister, the vice-minister). I'm sure he's accomplished, but then so is Obama.

17. Frankly, the whole "honorary degree" thing bothers me.
It's given out like a party-favor, to (usually) rich/famous people who are often PAID to speak at the university/college/school. These people do not need/use/want/deserve the degree.. It's a pretty meaningless gestire..kind of like the Press Club "mug", or the el cheapo plaque given to the Employee if the Month at Pretty Beauty Lady Nail Salon.
