PHOTO Happy Seder

An image of a prayer left in the Western Wall by US presidential candidate Barack Obama on July 24, 2008 during his visit to Jerusalem reads "Lord, Protect my family and me. Forgive me my sins, and help me guard against pride and despair. Give me the wisdom to do what is right and just. And make me an instrument of your will."

6. I agree AtomicKitten, I was creeped when this photo was released....
..I though it was the ultimate invasion of privacy, bordering on the obscene. But once it was made public I was almost glad, the message is so utterly beautiful.

7. It is a lovely message indeed.
It does give us some insight into a beautiful mind. I view it humbly considering it is something that probably should have been left in the wall undisturbed.

18. I'm glad to see the girls were included...
I got the impression from the press releases that this was going to be an "adult" thing. I should know better. Those girls have the kind of parents who would not think of leaving them out of something like this. I wish every kid was exposed to things like this. Maybe we wouldn't have all these hate groups around...

10. Since he wrote that thinking possibly it was a private statement....
Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 10:28 PM by Clio the Leo
.... and not something sent directly to the press, I think the words there are very powerful. More frank than practically anything he's ever said.

I've always been moved by that phrase, "help me guard against pride and despair."

The fact that he's ASKING to keep his pride in check means he probably already does ... and that "help me guard against despair..." is very touching.

We're all more human than we are anything else, aren't we?

As for the "make me an instrument of your will....." .... well, if I were a Freeper, I could go to town with that one .... as it is, it's kinda interesting to see him asking for the flip side of what *I* ask for which is to "help the President say and do the right things and keep him safe..."

I do feel a BIT dirty reading it. But then again, I think the world needs to see a few more examples of his relationship to the Lord. Granted, stolen means maybe aren't the best way.

Glad to hear the family is going to church this weekend. It's about time.

11. Didn't Jesus say to go into your closet to pray in private?
Not to make a public spectacle of prayer?

12. well
There weren't 'closets' when Jesus was alive - so how could he have said that?
I'm just curious.

16. Olde King James version of English: "closet" simply means small room, private place...
You have to account for the fact that every common quotation from the Bible that we use today without even thinking about comes from the King James version, which was published in 1611. Not only are there more accurate translations today (though the committee of Classical and Rabbinical scholars that the King put together certainly did their best), but the meaning and usage of many words have shifted over the past 400 years.

Nothing beats it for sheer poetry, however.

Hekate
