JOHN TANTILLO: This Tea Party Will Be the Fad That Flopped

By John Tantillo
Marketing Expert/Founder and President, Marketing Department of America

I’d bet my Borsalino hat that five years from now the tea party of 2009 is going to be considered little more than a fad that flopped. In fact, it shouldn’t even be compared to the monumental event that kicked our great country off with a rebellious bang.

The one thing I know Karl Marx got right was that history repeats itself: the first time as tragedy; the second time as farce.

This is America, I’m never against someone making a buck, but the merchandising of the tea party shows better than anything that we’re talking about a fad here, nothing more.

This time it’s a farce. Like anything marketed, popular movements need a symbol that resonates widely and deeply. The connection can’t be complicated or second hand. It’s got to have clout and it’s got to instantly make sense to everyone.

For colonial Americans, tea was a powerful symbol. It was something they drank a lot of and it was taxed heavily and this taxation was something they had no say over. Throwing it overboard said everything that needed to be said. They didn’t steal it; they rejected it. This was a statement that went straight to the British purse strings. It might have looked spontaneous, but it was sophisticated and made perfect sense in the context of the time.

Tea has nothing to do with our frustrations today. If tea was taxed at 100% most of us could still afford to drink it. Unfortunately, the tea of this year’s tea party is just a recycled symbol and, not only that, this symbol doesn’t make much sense.

Now, Faux as the functioning propaganda organ of the Limbaugh Party...

They are almost an Onion parody of themselves at this point.

6. This teabagging follows a pattern set in 1992
Around the time Clinton was first elected the dittoheads and future freepers started something called 'Bake Sales'. It seemed to excite them and relieve some of the angst they feel because their boy lost.

18. Most people think of tea parties as a revolt against txs
However, the tin foil hat groups are looking at these as a revolt against Obama. No matter how many people show up they are going to see all these people want Obama out.

21. Yes, but.......
the tinfoil hat groups are trying to make the tea parties about much more than that, believing that everyone who attends also thinks Obama is the anti-Christ and will support armed revolution to get him out.

19. The teabagging has worked in some ways
It has made protesting seem foolish. I think that was part of the aim.

We see clips of people who are probably in the 95% of us that earn less than 250k and won't get any tax increase, protesting to protect the super-rich who will have their taxes restored to Clinton-era levels, using an important symbol of our country's history very inappropriately.

Taxation without representation? The super-rich are very well represented in our government. There are thousands of lobbyists protecting their interests every day. The super-rich Wall Streeters got their bailouts from the Bush Gang and have a few of their guys on our president's team of rivals.

But the rest of us need a lot more stimulus spending that will put us back to work and give us enough financial security to start spending again to create more demand in our economy.

However, if we try to hold demonstrations right now, demanding more bailouts for the public sector, we are confused with the goofy teabaggers and less people will want to join our efforts.

I admire President Obama in many ways. I appreciate his cutting taxes for most of us and knowing that 95% of us will either get a cut or no increase in our taxes-- WHEN WE GET BACK TO WORK.
