Lets claim this rescue as a Victory for Obama.
Edited on Sun Apr-12-09 01:50 PM by MrPerson
Don't kid yourself.

The media was readying the America Held Hostage logo.

Probably was going to get Ted Koppel out of mothballs.

This was how they did in Jimmy Carter.

Obama fucked them over by succeeding.

1. It is a victory for Obama, just as if he would have been blamed if the captain had died.
He is our CIC, the buck stops with him.

10. So are coultergeist's too, apparently.
Evidently she was on TV somewhere last night yowling about how this was Obama's failure (that is, BEFORE the captain was rescued and the pirates were dealt with). You better believe people like her would be out, first thing tomorrow (Monday) morning trash talking Obama as being weak and ineffective and letting the pirates walk all over him etc etc etc and if bush were in office this wouldn't have happened. It was already on some people's lips.

Thank goodness this ended the way it did. And we have EVERY RIGHT to crow about it and credit Obama with a win here.

7. I'm glad the Captain is safe.
And we didn't even have to nuke Somalia. :eyes:

I'm also glad we tried to negotiate first. The Somali pirates could have killed Capt. Philips a couple times. They didn't. I don't think they're all that bad, but they are a nuisance and could become worse. We need to do something about the crisis situations in Africa.

I somehow doubt another one of our ships will be captured and that President Obama will ensure security is ramped-up a bit more.

9. A caller to one of the Prog radio shows this week said these so-called "pirates"...
...originally took to the seas to defend the Somali coast against toxic waste dumping.

As usual, there's more to the story than the two-dimensional US Corporate Media are willing to tell us.

NGU.

11. You are correct, sir!
If this had gone badly the right would be blaming President Obama, and of course the fact that it ended in a good way they will go out of their way to give credit to anyone but President Obama.

12. This has reminded me of the Mayaguez Incident in 1975
Edited on Sun Apr-12-09 02:16 PM by FightingIrish
That rescue of a US container ship was not quite as successful. It was one of Gerald Ford's biggest tests. (U.S.: 41 total dead and missing. 18 Marines and Airmen killed in action/missing in action. 23 Marines killed in a helicopter crash during the operation. 50 wounded.)

Thanks to the actions of the crew of the Maersk Alabama, the ship did not have to be rescued. We may never know all of the deliberations in the White House, but it had to be a tough call and, this time, the decider decided well.

15. Right!
I have the tv on. The "reporters" are repeatedly saying it was the President who authorized the use of force to bring this to a close.

Frankly, I've never doubted for a second that our President is no wimp, and when needed he'd use force if necessary. I also think he'll use a scalpel instead of a sledge hammer whenever possible. In this case, snipers were used instead of blowing something up.

17.  I agree completely.
Little Miss GOP Talking Points, Alex Witt, and GOP water boy, David Gregory, outdid each other wringing their hands over this phony crisis this am. They will just have to put the Obama as Carter meme back in the drawer for now as their more rabid counterparts at Faux keep pounding the Obama as Hitler and Stalin drum. Is it any wonder this country is as screwed up as it is.

18. Bullshit. It was a victory for the snipers that hit three targets moving on
three different axis, while moving on at least two themselves.
Great fucking shooting.
