Gingrich Eyes Possible White House Run In 2012
(04-14) 09:39 PDT Athens, Ga. (AP) --

More than a decade after he stepped down as speaker of the House into what seemed like almost certain political oblivion, Newt Gingrich is back and seemingly more relevant than ever.

Gingrich seems to be everywhere these days, headlining an endless circuit of GOP dinners, popping up on TV news shows, authoring yet another best-selling book and acting as a policy guru to out-of-power congressional Republicans on how to do battle with the Democratic White House.

As beleaguered Republicans look for a standard bearer after last year's disastrous election, they've been tossing around the names of flashy new stars like Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the 2008 vice presidential candidate, and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, young and Indian American in a party that's increasingly identified with older white men.

But could the GOP's savior instead be a wonkish, twice-divorced throwback to the fiercely partisan Republican revolution?

Gingrich has managed to keep himself in the public eye since leaving the House, but the blitz of public appearances in recent months is reminiscent of the run-up to 2007, when he toyed with a presidential run only to abandon it before the primaries began. Now, some are speculating that the former congressman from Georgia is laying the groundwork for a White House bid in 2012.

1. derby eyes near-certain defeat of Gingrich in 2012
At which point the GOP will come to him, recuperating in his hospital bed, and say "I want a divorce..."

3. From the article:
"Still, Gingrich has a reputation as an angry partisan crusader who delighted in firebombing Democrats with vicious verbal assaults. He was labeled a hypocrite when it was revealed he was carrying on an extramarital affair with a Capitol Hill aide at the same time he was working to impeach President Bill Clinton for lying about his own infidelity."

4. He always eyes a White House run. That's how he makes a living.
He floats that every year, and lives off speaking engagement fees, book sales, and whatever other money he swindles from people all excited by his "plan." He has no plan to run for anything, he just needs the attention.

7. I think Newt should be the RNC Chairman, if thinking in the Republican's best interest.
He seems to be one of the only voices that could effectively lead the Republican party, and could launch his campaign for President after 2-3 years there.

11. He does this all the time, getting richer on his PAC money from
donations.
I hope he does run - he will lose decisively, and I love to hear him mutter and whine.

He has absolutely NO decent or good characteristics, and is the most worthless human being I have ever seen in my life.

12. I think Gingrich would be a much more interesting opponent than Palin or Jindal.
It would be much easier for Obama to debate a reasonably intelligent person than an ignoramus. The other point is that Gingrich is not very religious and would not get a lot of support from the extreme right wing.

21. well...
first off, Gingrich will LOSE.

However, he's the best they have, honestly. He's intelligent. He's a constructionist... which I respect (and disagree with.)

He's also divisive... and old.

He'd stretch to see 130 Electoral votes.

There's only ONE way the 'pubs win in 12... and that's if the Wall Street criminals miss their big $$ and if big $$ backs the Pub heavily...

even then... they could only win if the Obama admin stumbles often... and has a mixed bag in the first 4 years.

22. Those that don't think republicans
will vote for Gingrich or that he hasn't a chance are not really up on what it takes to be a winning republican. Lying doesn't harm their chances. Cheating on their families is overlooked. After our last pretender president, we know that smarts aren't a requirement. If Gingrich wants to run, he could have the nomination. Obama would have to work to beat him. Just look at the electorate that put bush in twice.

24. I don't think it'd be close...
For a pub to win they need:

1) Religious right (Fundies) Gingrich-check.

2) Blue Blood Repugs (Robber Barons) Gingrich-check.

3) Libertarian leaners... Gingrich-check

4) Soccer Moms/Security moms... NO WAY. Gingrich is "unlikeable" to women...

SO in true Republican tradition... men vote 55-45 for Gingrich, women go 75-25 for Obama... Obama with 350 EV's...

They should probably try using Gingrich as the "Darth Cheney" and run him as Veep... Maybe Perry-Gingrich, Cantor-Gingrich or something like that...

I've read Gingrich a lot... I like his Histo-Fiction books...

I haven't read any of his politics books but his fiction is good. I think he's a smart guy.

AND Gingrich doesn't like Palin. Palin won't be anywhere to be seen in 12... I see her running for Senate in 14.

25. another option...
If Gingrich won the nomination and selected a young 38-39 year old "up and comer" that was attractive, energetic and "cool"... if Aaron Schock were 35 I'd say someone like him...

He's a Republican... the best "Abs" in D.C., TMZ follows him around... but he'll only be 31 on election day in 12... maybe he'll run in 16.

23. It's Not Saying Much,
Edited on Tue Apr-14-09 02:00 PM by On the Road
but in terms of substance, Gingrich is one of the more effective candidates who have a shot at the nomination. His agenda is radical in the way Reagan's was, but he seems (how to put it) less lost in promoting it.

Wired magazine, for example, ambivalently labelled him as "friend AND foe" of the technical community.

He is just so unssympathetic as a person that I can't believe he could win.

27. Only one way he can win... if his opponent is not a Senator, Governor, Vice President,
President or bonafide military hero. For the record, Colin Powell is not a military hero.

your charisma quotient is about a .5 on a scale of 1-10...you just don't have what it takes to be President.
