Druge retort--Texas wants to leave the US
WAKE UP CALL: TEXAS GOV. BACK RESOLUTION AFFIRMING SOVEREIGNTY
Tue Apr 14 2009 08:44:54 ET

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry joined state Rep. Brandon Creighton and sponsors of House Concurrent Resolution (HCR) 50 in support of states’ rights under the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

“I believe that our federal government has become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of our citizens, and its interference with the affairs of our state,” Gov. Perry said. “That is why I am here today to express my unwavering support for efforts all across our country to reaffirm the states’ rights affirmed by the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I believe that returning to the letter and spirit of the U.S. Constitution and its essential 10th Amendment will free our state from undue regulations, and ultimately strengthen our Union.”

Perry continued: "Millions of Texans are tired of Washington, DC trying to come down here to tell us how to run Texas."

9. Okay, here's what we do....
First, release Texas from the United States and strip them all of their citizenship.

Then, we invade Texas to capture famed war criminal George W. Bush and ship him off to Spain.

We can avoid the whole mess of turning over US Citizens to other countries with a little creativity.

Only right they currently possess that other states don't share is the right to split up into multiple smaller states, AFAIK. They'd lose clout in the House of Representatives but effectively gain 6 or 8 more Senate seats.

21. It's a prelude.
Edited on Tue Apr-14-09 02:34 PM by Lyric
They know damned well that the "Necessary and Proper" clause of the Constitution gives the modern federal government most of the powers that states used to have, and they also know that the 10th Amendment was basically stripped of any meaning by the 14th Amendment, which requires states to be held to the same Constitutional standards as the federal government (i.e., states can't violate the federal Constitution.) The vast majority of the laws they wish to pass under "states rights" are ones that would violate the federal Constitution. They KNOW this. They are making a pointless gesture, trying to build up a case to justify pushing for eventual secession. When the government "fails" to meet their "reasonable" demand for more state power, they'll have their excuse.

Watch and see. Those folks aren't terribly bright. They think they're being clever, but they're as transparent as glass.

19. If it actually comes to civil war--let them go.
The lives of thousands upon thousands of American soldiers and innocent civilians are not worth keeping Texas, or any other state. The first Civil War was horrific. The second would be infinitely worse. If we try to force them to stay, they'll have the perfect excuse to do what they've dreamed of doing for decades--systematically murdering every Democrat, liberal, black person, gay person, and non-fundie that comes within the sights of their guns. They won't save their violence for soldiers and battlefields; these people are cowards to the core, and they'll be killing "liberal" civilians before we can blink. What most of them are too fearful to do because of the law right now, they'd do without a second thought if we give them the excuse of a "patriotic" war.

I am Southern. I love my home state. But if West Virginia tries to secede, I'm out of here. NO state is worth the lives we'd lose. Not a single one. If Texas starts another Civil War, the rest of the South is probably going to follow suit, the war will drag on for decades, and I am not interested in my nine-year-old son being drafted when he's older to die for the sake of hanging on to a bunch of bigoted rednecks. There are good people in Texas--we can get them out before we shut down the borders. The rest of them can fucking have the place for all I care.

We'll resettle our good liberal people, take our (movable) federal property, make sure they have no goddamned nukes, and let the redneck fuckwads collapse into third-world Jesusland obscurity on their own. If they get aggressive toward us afterward, we'll fucking destroy them once and for all, and give the state back to the people who deserve it.

107. The Republican argument about having lawlessness on our border would apply if we did that
It is a bad idea.

I think the First Civil War was valuable, just and proper. It demonstrated to Abraham Lincoln the value of a black soldiers and prompted him to extend the vote to black males. It ended the crying shame slavery was to this nation. It also put everyone who wanted to own another human being on alert: your time is over.

If their remnants want to stage a new dawn and a new order, it is a fight worth taking on. It is also a call to fight that this nation should answer.

We aren't at that point yet, but it makes no sense to think that if you turn the other cheek you won't have a revolution of a different kind on your hands.

I have been a Democrat all my life. I have never believed violence for the sake of violence is a just cause. I do happen to believe an injustice in Texas is an injustice for the rest of the nation. These yahoos gave us Bush. If we don't deal with their kookiness, their craziness might set new limits which infect the rest of the world tomorrow.

We can't continue to let these people talk like this. They are stirring the bottom of the kook pot.

28. If they want to have less fed govt. regulation, all they have to do is give back
all the money they get from them. They can halt all projects funded by the feds, finish them by themselves and
pay the rest of us back for what's already spent. They can pay for their own schools, medicaid and medicare, build their own roads.

Give their share of the funds to CA or FL, they can use it.

And this Texan responds with, "lighten up, Francis". Allow everyone a bit of visceral and steamy reaction to the governor's position of ignorance. If you honestly believe that those on this thread are actually pushing for the removal of TX from the union, then I think you're looking a bit too hard for insults that don't really exist anywhere but your own imagination.

Literalism is almost as ugly as prejudice...

89. Wow.
You're <1> as proud of Texas as if you built it yourself, aren't <2> you?

<1> Note proper use of the contraction of "you are."

<2> This is kind of a special case. Literally, it means "are not", but is taken as "are you not".....the trailing "you" notwithstanding.

Figure you might as well learn what you can while you're here. And if you REALLY want to impress when you go back to freeperville and show off your new knowledge, you can tell them about our opposable thumbs.

93. They weren't interested in State's Rights in 2000.
They certainly weren't about State's Rights concerned when the United States Supreme Court, without any Constitutional authority, decided the 2000 election. In that case State's Rights to run elections was stomped into the dirt along with the authority of Florida's Supreme Court. This just reaffirms my opinion that Republicans are scum bag enemies of the Republic. Their concept of justice is something to be used to crush their enemies and enrich themselves.

Obama got more votes than McCain did in our largest cities/counties:

Austin/Travis County 136,981(McCain) 254,017(Obama)
Dallas/Dallas County 310,000(McCain) 422,989(Obama)
Houston/Harris County 571,883(McCain) 590,982(Obama)

Texas will be BLUE soon ;)

Cheaper to live in Texas than in some other sunbelt states. Let's ask them if they want to give up their Social Security checks and Medicare.
