I compared Texas notes with a girlfreind who lived in Odessa about the same time I lived in Amarillo (1983).

She had me beat hands down for suckiest experience evah.

I feel for your homey, but I really won't miss Texas (with apologies to people from the coast and Austin, the only sane parts of that state, and of course those stuck in the hinterlands, come and join the human race, do. I have a spare couch :)...)

Thus, they are now knee-deep in the problem that confronted Clinton-supporters months ago: Obama is much smarter than they are. Those gimmicks that look so clever to children look very different to him.

12. Oh bloody hell ...

What damn century is it?

There was a time, not all that long ago, when anyone who even hinted at this being acceptable rhetoric for even an academic would have gotten that person laughed out of the room for the galactic display of stupidity. Now these idiots are governors and media personalities.

Glen Beck, Rick Perry ... Chuck By-God Norris for pity's sake. Which of these motherfuckers is this century's Edmund Ruffin? Has to be Beck ... crazy as a shithouse rat.

And people told me *I* was crazy ten years ago when I suggested the rhetoric used by the League of the South needed to be watched and consistently countered, or it would make it into the mainstream at some point. I half didn't believe myself. Well, there you go ...

40. You and me both
I was told I was being alarmist and "oh, they don't mean it" when I pointed a finger at LOS. Then there was the hoo-hah at the SCV gathering in Virginia. LOS totally ruined and stole the money and property from SCV -- that's all that was about. When they had looted money and property in hand, they headed for county and state government. Betcherass we're hearing their looney rhetoric everywhere now.

What they couldn't get honestly, they stole and connived their way into. It's the right-wing way.

Oh, we can talk.

47. Well, hello fellow traveler ...

Sounds like we've wandered some of the same stomping grounds.

There's a lot to that LoS/SCV insanity. I had the misfortune of witnessing some of that from the inside via a historical preservation mailing list that got co-opted. Michael Hill showed up, and it was war. This was all years ago, but I ended up seeing some of their internal documents and policy statements/position papers/plans before they got cleaned up for public consumption, and it's just scary. (What's also scary is that what's on their website(s) is "cleaned up.") These people are serious, and they had a plan that really might work given the state of our society. 9/11 actually helped them, sad to say.

Shot in the dark, but you wouldn't know "the Crawfish" would you? His name real name is Ed.

Edited on Tue Apr-14-09 10:15 PM by Blue_In_AK
That's been Alaska's line for decades. Alaskan Republicans are ALWAYS whining about federal interference up here -- too much land locked up in parks and preserves (ANILCA), too much land turned over and too many benefits given to the Native people by way of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, too much federal weight given to the subsistence rights of rural hunters. They can go on and on and on for days.

But, of course, Alaska does receive a lot of federal money -- and as long as it was Ted Stevens bringing it home, it was fine. In fact, we were given dire warnings that if Mark Begich were elected senator, Alaska wouldn't get ANY more federal money, we would be
d-o-o-m-e-d. So they complain on the one hand but take the money with the other.

But Sarah's kind of a different sort. I really do think she's a secessionist. She doesn't seem to want anything to do with the federal government, which makes me wonder why she's so interested in running for national office. I think she thinks it's like a popularity contest or something. She's such a weirdo.

Major Military Installations

Army
Fort Bliss Red River Army Depot Fort Hood Fort Sam Houston/Camp Bullis Ingleside Army Depot

Navy & Marine Corps
Corpus Christi Naval Air Station/Naval Hospital/Naval Station Kingsville Naval Air Station

Air Force
Randolph AFB Brooks City Base Lackland AFB Sheppard AFB Air Force Plant 4 (formerly Carswell AFB) Dyess AFB Goodfellow AFB Laughlin AFB

Coast Guard
Group Corpus Christi Group Galveston Marine Safety Office Galveston Marine Safety Office Houston Marine Safety Office Port Arthur Air Station Corpus Christi Air Station Houston Vessel Traffic Service Houston/Galveston

Other good stuff

Jet Propulsion Labs

Johnson Space Center

Los Alamos

Galveston National Lab

And, they will be a foreign country unless they choose to be the same status as Puerto Rico or Guam-- so new passports will be needed, they will be responsible for all the Rio Grande border crossings, there will be Jones Act and customs issues for Galveston shipping, and they get no hurricane help, flood insurance, or other Federal handouts. They will have to field their own army and navy and state department, and join the UN. Oops, forget that last one-- they hate the UN.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

So, fuck 'em-- let the Texas Republic assholes take over the place.

(We'll take the good people up here and maybe even buy them winter coats for their troubles.)

can move there and create their one, true, Red State. (Austin and its' residents will have to be airlifted out and a facsimile city will be constructed in the state of their choice)

They can:
*Mandate gun ownership for everyone over the age of seven
*Ban abortion and all forms of birth control
*Ban gay marriage and homosexuality in general
*Bring back stoning
*Mandate prayer in school every hour on the hour
*Ban stem cell research
*Build a gigantic wall around state with barbed wire/guard towers.(They think it's to keep others out - it's really to protect the rest of us from them)
*Have their growth industries be prisons and Little House on the Prairie dress factories
*Control radio and television and limit the content to QVC, Matlock reruns and superchurch broadcasts
*Have absolutely no government control, oversight or regulation of any private entity, utility, product or service
*Privatize all public assets and services (they will really enjoy paying $8 a gallon for drinking water to some Cheney subsidiary)
*Close libraries since only need 2 books anyway - The Bible and the Purpose Driven Life
*Issue their own currency, the "Bushel" which will be pegged to the value of manure on world markets
*Mandatory showings of "Red Dawn" monthly in all town halls throughout the state
*Reduce taxes to $1.50 a year per citizen over 18. (Primarily used for Red Dawn licensing fees)
*State food - Beefy Beef Nuggets in Beef sauce

81(R)HCR 50:

RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby claim sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment to the
Constitution of the United States over all powers not otherwise
enumerated and granted to the federal government by the
Constitution of the United States; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That this serve as notice and demand to the federal
government, as our agent, to cease and desist, effective
immediately, mandates that are beyond the scope of these
constitutionally delegated powers; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That all compulsory federal legislation that
directs states to comply under threat of civil or criminal
penalties or sanctions or that requires states to pass legislation
or lose federal funding be prohibited or repealed; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That the Texas secretary of state forward official
copies of this resolution to the president of the United States, to
the speaker of the house of representatives and the president of the
senate of the United States Congress, and to all the members of the
Texas delegation to the congress with the request that this
resolution be officially entered in the Congressional Record as a
memorial to the Congress of the United States of America.

If you go to the link in the OP and go to the bottom of the page, you'll see the link to the actual resolution referenced above.
