Janine Garofalo Hit The Nail On The Head
On Keith Olbermann about the tea parties:

"Let's be very honest about what this is about. This is not about bashing Democrats. It's not about taxes. They have no idea what the Boston Tea party was about. They don't know their history at all. It's about hating a black man in the White House," she said on MSNBC's "The Countdown" with Keith Olbermann Thursday evening. "This is racism straight up and is nothing but a bunch of teabagging rednecks. There is no way around that."

She went onto comparing the Tea Baggers with the KKK.

I believe she is right - this protest shit is nothing more than a bunch of ill informed racists who depend on Fox News for their daily IV loaded with hate.

3. That's right. The anti-Clinton shit was just as bad. He was 'white trash' that crashed the party.
The right said rude things about his kid, about his mother - her husbands and her going to the racetrack.

Hillary was a man-hating harridan.

This is a repeat.

39. This is much worse to them than Clinton
Edited on Fri Apr-17-09 02:11 PM by EffieBlack
They may have seen the Clintons as white trash, but they were still white and, thus, did not upset what they view as the natural order of things.

Obama, on the other hand, represents something absolutely terrifying to them:an irreversible alteration in the white power structure that has always assured white Americans that no matter how wretched, how poor how ignorant, and yes, how trashy they may be, they were STILL superior to and had every right to look down on ANY black person.

The advent of President Obama has ripped from their grasp the one last social certainty these people could hang onto and they are both terrified and furious.

This is on a whole' nother level than the Clinton bashing.

No, this is about losing.

If it'd been Hillary or any other Democrat who won, they'd be lashing out in the same idiotic way because their leaders use them like puppets.

Sure, for some the bitterness is exacerbated by the fact Obama is black.

Janeane's hair gets paid big dollar to look like that. What does your just so look bring to the table? How does your blow out help the Democratic Party?
I just do not understand the need to insult those with whom you disagree. And I agree with the brilliant artist with the messy hair.

22. I just keep my hair clean and tidy. No blow-out or attempts to play edgy-urban, " I'm so hip"
crap you claim she spends big bucks for.

But then I don't have anything to prove or any insecurities to patch over. And I'm not a public speaker.

But then, getting back to what she says and how she says it as opposed to making a simple observation on the way she packages herself as a public person:

Janeane has always ended up sounding like the proto-typical, stereotype of an "elitist-Democrat" who delights in putting down the less educated Americans who get used as pawns.

She makes me cringe when I think some might get the impression she stands for the Left.

33. She also went another step farther
by stating her surprise that there were so many racists in the country. I've been lulled into this by thinking that electing a person of color has been an advancement. Intellectually I know that is not true but I want it to be so. Though I do believe Obama's election has served to marginalize the racists. Yesterday was their excuse to fly their racist flags under the guise of 'sanctioned' protest.

They have their share of rushbot, racist hate mongers as was clearly evidenced by some of the protest signs. But there was also a contingent of Ayn Rand Liberterians that were pissed about the bank bailouts and the stimulus package, and a few groups of the abortion is murder supported by 'evil libruls' fundie nutbags.

18. And just because I can't resist the urge to show that I *do* know my history.

And because nobody else posted it yet...

In response to an increased tea tax by a parliament that included no representatives from the colonies, the folks in New England decided to boycott tea. Waiting out the boycott would have hurt the East Indies Tea Company's bottom line. In response to their corporate masters, the British decided to force the colony to purchase the tea whether the colony wanted to or not.

The Boston Tea Party was in response to this force. It was not to protest the tax.

20. I saw her "act" on KO last night, and I started getting annoyed.
Edited on Fri Apr-17-09 10:30 AM by Seeking Serenity
It seemed like the underlying point of Keith's and her discussion was that criticism of the president, at least from the right, is, a fortiori, because of racism. It was confirming what I had feared prior to his inauguration, that is, liberals and Democrats would start viewing any and all criticism of President Obama as being racist. I just don't think we should go down that road because I fear that will only help to speed the loss of power and currency the word "racism" has. If the independent voters who helped elect Barack Obama but who may later object to some of his policies and positions suddenly discover that they are being branded as "racist" because of whatever opposition they may have, that could be a very real turn-off at a time when we need to solidifying their "hearts and minds."

Were there some subtle and not-so-subtle racist (or at least racially insensitive) messages at some of those assemblies? Sure. But I don't know that that made up the majority or even up to half of the protesters that day.

It is the same as when the right tried to smear the entire anti-war protests just because there were some Maoists, North Korea apologists, and "death-to-Israel" types in the crowd.

And then, when Garofalo started going off on her pseudo-"scientific" blather about how Republicans or conservatives in general are physiologically and neurologically defective, I wanted to scream! That was the most asinine crap I'd heard all day.

And too those who are angered by the corporate bailouts and monies down that rathole. I'm angered by it, but there's no place for me to publicly vent, I would join a protest against TARP, et al. I won't join the tea protest, but others may have for a place to scream. Dana ; )

blatantly racist signs or spending a lot of time threatening Obama's life on the internet because they disagree with his politics, I don't think that any reasonable person would accuse them of being bigots simply because of the fact that they are not fond of Obama.

Yes, it's unfair and intellectually dishonest to chalk up any criticism of Obama to bigotry, but it's equally absurd to be accused of labeling everyone who is critical of Obama as a racist when you are pointing out the words and actions of actual racists who are making overt and unabashed displays of their bigotry.

36. She's on point.
What I find interesting is that there are so many cries of 'bullshit' when there are charges of racism leveled about attacks on Obama.

Maybe it's because some here don't want to defend their present and possibly future disagreements with Obama against having a racist bent, but that does not negate the clear expressions of racism in a lot of those protest signs.

There was one recent case of a serviceman who didn't want to serve under Obama; for a segment of the population who will never support him, it is exactly that. They don't want to be led by or take direction from a black man.

these teabaggers is hate.

If Hillary president that hate would manifest itself differently, but the core of hate would remain the same.

The fact that Obama is black definitely draws the race hatred part of the whole hate package to the surface.

Mark my words, this is a dangerous mix. Highly combustible.

This is about Democrats being in power; his skin color is just another tool in their arsenal against The Democratic Party -which appeals only to their base and will NEVER win them a national election again- The result? They come out looking even more like the fringe element that they now are.

We The People elected the Black Liberal Barack Obama - WE are the majority now. To boil the opposition down to nothing BUT race is weak and a major turn off.

In 8 years when all is said and done I don't want this to have been only about Barack Obama. We can't make that mistake. Jeneane IS making that mistake.

We need to keep getting Our message out, keep getting people registered to vote and then make sure they DO vote.

Yes they are hypocrites for doing it now instead of under Bush, but that doesn't make them racist. Of course a couple of them are, but the majority aren't.

The truth is, first off, your logic and hers is bullshit, but secondly the fact is they would have protested if it were Hillary or Kerry or anyone else for that matter. They have nothing left. Their last president was their "conservative" which turned out to be a socialist for the rich while increasing government size and power substantially.

Maybe instead of lobbing the "R" word around like it's fucking cake, we be serious when making the accusation.

Oh dear you are conflicted and afflicted. Did you forget to drink your cup of sanity today? Shame.

57. I disagree
If Hillary Clinton or John Edwards were doing bailouts and Fox convinced them they were raising taxes, they would be equally mad. It is true however, that they don't know anything about history.

58. I'd have been more measured and said.....
I think that the alienation Republicans and conservatives are trying to tap into and pump up here probably depends to some degree on Obama being black, just as the idea that during the presidential campaign, depite his having been exhaustively investigated, Republicans still kept coming out with that creepy "Who is Barack Obama?" line. But that's me. Conservatives would have been on the warpath had Hillary Clinton been elected president, sure, but I think it's pretty clear that they've portrayed Obama as even more alien than her.

59. Janeane applied the razor.
I had been somewhat dumbfounded by the screwy, muddy reasoning behind the protests. When I heard her say this, it rang true with me.

63. I think she's wrong on this. Plus, she's kind of a nut case. On the good side....
she gets the freepers boiling made. On the bad side, it gives them a reason to rally together.

But I don't think the teabaggers were all about O's race, except maybe a few. I think it was Libertarians and Pubics who were having a tantrum about the "libruls" being in power. And trying to get their base aroused so they'll go to the polls next election. That's because the pubic party has been less than enthusiastic lately.

version of Ann Coulter in that video. She was quite nasty and not funny. I agree that she will be a reason for freepers to rally. The problem is that those kinds of "rallying" people can become caricatures of themselves if they are not careful. I would hate for that to happen to Janeane because I've always liked her.

75. Yeah, we should always conduct ourselves so as not to anger those gutless assholes (Freepers).
Enjoy living in FEAR, but I'll take the beloved "nut case" before any "let's not anger the Freepers" personal any damn day. :eyes:

80. Not all Republicans are racists, but all racists are Republican.
Kind of gives the Republican Party a bad name when they diligently seek their support and never condemn their ignorance.
