On the house: Fox aired 107 ads for its coverage of tea party protests over 10 days

Summary: From April 6 to April 15, Fox News aired at least 107 commercial promotions for their coverage of the April 15 tea parties. The majority of all the ads -- 58 -- ran on April 14 and 15.

From April 6 to April 15, Fox News aired at least 107 commercial promotions for their coverage of the tea party protests that took place on April 15. As Media Matters for America has documented, Fox News aggressively promoted the events in recent weeks, encouraging viewers to get involved with tea party protests across the country. Indeed, Fox News repeatedly described them as "FNC Tax Day Tea Parties." On April 15, four of the network's hosts broadcast live from various tea parties.

Of the 107 ads, 58 were 10-second spots promoting a specific Fox News program that would be covering the events. The programs promoted in the 10-second spots were: Your World with Neil Cavuto, Glenn Beck, The O'Reilly Factor, Hannity, and On the Record with Greta Van Susteren. Of those five, only The O'Reilly Factor did not offer live coverage of the protests from one of the tea party sites. Forty-nine of the ads aired were 30-second spots that promoted Fox News' "fair and balanced network coverage -- live" of the tea parties.

Methodology

The study counted every commercial promoting Fox News' coverage of the April 15 tea parties that aired during Fox News original programming between 6 a.m. and midnight ET from April 6 to April 15. Each commercial was identified as either a 10-second spot or a 30-second spot. Commercials that ran during rebroadcasts of shows were not included. All the commercials that ran during Fox News original programming were viewed on digital video.

Below are the 10-second spots that ran on Fox:

•4/14/09, Live Desk, 4/14/09, 1:49:40 -- 1:49:50
•4/14/09, Live Desk, 2:18:58 -- 2:19:08
•4/14/09, Studio B With Shepard Smith, 3:15:57 -- 3:16:07
•4/14/09, Special Report With Bret Baier, 6:48:10 -- 6:48:20
•4/14/09, On the Record, 10:47:18 -- 10:47:28
Below is the 30-second spot that ran on Fox:

•4/13/09, Glenn Beck, 5:44:34 -- 5:45:04

Fox donated at least half-million dollars in free teabagging ads
by Jed Lewison

Fri Apr 17, 2009 at 02:18:29 PM PDT
Fox News donated at least $500,000 in free advertising to promote tea parties, according to a Daily Kos analysis of a new report by Media Matters.

The Media Matters report revealed that Fox aired at least 107 free advertisements for tea parties from April 8 through April 15. Based on Nielsen viewership numbers reported by Media Bistro's TV Newser, a CPM (cost per thousand) of $4.06 for a 30-second advertisement (source: SNL Kagan), and adjusting the CPM for 10-second promotional ads, Fox delivered $659,617.37 worth of advertising.

The details of the Daily Kos analysis -- which is limited to Fox's free ads and does not include the heavy coverage given to the tea parties by Fox's hosts -- can be viewed here.

Given the inherent lack of precision in generating this analysis, it is conservative to state that Fox donated at least $500,000 in advertising to promote tea parties.

Here are some examples of ads run by Fox to promote tea parties:

Does an actual live human being sit around watching Fox all day counting these up?

It almost makes me sadder to think of someone rocking the Tivo to count the commercials on Fox.

2. Yes.
Or record their coverage and scan through it, looking for good or useful stuff. Call it "taking one for the team."

9. Can you imagine if they gave that time to a good cause
like recruiting donations for food banks, or raising awareness and recruiting volunteers for anti-domestic violence campaigns? How many shelters could be stocked and renovated with the help they could rally?

What if they put that time into a campaign to get people to join exercise groups in parks or gyms? How much of an impact could they have on people's health and the obesity epidemic?

Instead they had rallies and tea parties, and the people who came for the most part didn't even know what they were protesting. :eyes:

7. And then they have the nerve to say they didn't promote the tea parties.
Do they ever tell the truth?

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT & Video..
by Chad Rubel

"You may have thought everything that was said at the teabagging parties on Wednesday was right-wing drivel designed to mislead and inflame the masses.
Well, there was at least one brave soul in Pensacola, Florida.
"Pensacola Jeff" is what we'll call him because, well, his name is Jeff and he spoke in Pensacola.

He weaves in and out throughout his speech, using talking points designed to get cheers from the crowd, and sneaking in the truth like vegetables to a picky eater.

Pensacola Jeff starts out with a big shout-out to the troops and veterans. That line gets huge applause, as it should. Then he gives us a history lesson.

Back in 2000, there was a budget surplus in the country."
After Pensacola Jeff mentions the budget surplus, some guy in the crowd yells out, "What happened?"
Well, let's find out.

"And during the next seven years, it was destroyed by the profligate spending of the Bush Administration. And here we are today, here we are today in a situation."

At this point, he sees the crowd isn't really following along, so he goes for the easy line.

"Let me ask you this: Cheer if you make less than $250,000 a year. Just cheer." The crowd cheers: they are back on his side. "Your taxes are going to be cut under the current budget. Congratulations."

Pensacola Jeff then talks about being laid-off by his employer back in September due to budget cuts, pointing out that this was before the election. Then he goes in for the close."

They simply cannot be permitted to use the "news" moniker while working for a political party. MSNBC unequally advocates for both parties (obviously favoring Dems), but they do not de facto promote a particular political party the way Faux does..

11. It was cool and cutting edge when Hunter S. Thompson became part of the story he was covering,
When the faux newz country club douchebags try to manufacture and/or insinuate themselves into the teabag stories, it's beyond lame.
Only the racists and mullet-heads believe this to be a grass-roots movement.
