PHOTOS Obama and Lula: It's a love thing.
Washington, Saturday, March 14, 2009

G20 summit in London April 2, 2009

"President Barack Obama says Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is the "most popular politician on earth" and has attributed it to his good looks. Chatting at the G20 summit in London, President Obama shook hands with President Lula saying 'love this guy'."

1. Gotta admit
on face value alone, he looks like someone I'd want to have a beer with, and they make some pretty good brews down in Brazil.

2. Man It's Good To See
world leaders smile and give our new President a thumbs up! The pictures between Bush in foreign countries, vs Obama are night and day.

Bush was always looking unsure or goofy.

3. It's Union Square all over again!
Mon Jun-18-07: I was at Union Square in Somerville Mass yesterday

This is the spot where George Washington raised the first American flag:

All around me were people speaking Portuguese, and brazilian flags were flying from many storefronts.

We went into a bakery and the attendant, a young woman, came over to assist. We told her we were window shopping and she said to us, in Portuguese, "I'm sorry, I don't speak English". With some hand gestures and a few words in Spanish that I guessed might be close to Portuguese, we were able to get our message across.

She smiled and let us look around the store while she went back to talking Portuguese to a young man (possibly her boyfriend, by the way he looked at her). They were laughing and teasing with each other, completely oblivious to our presence.

We finally picked a loaf of pan dulce and paid.

On the way out, I blurted out the one word of Portuguese I know:

- Obrigado! - I said.

- bonada! - she replied.

And we left.

It was weird to be in this place, the heart of American history, and not understand anything that was spoken around me.

Weird, but beautiful at the same time.

At no point did I feel, threatened, unwelcome, criticized, or ridiculed. Quite the contrary, I felt that everyone around me was trying to reach out and connect.

To connect in a way that transcends language and culture.

Trying to connect through the universal language of smile.

Thank you for making me remember this post!

5. All white men with beards look like clones.
Edited on Fri Apr-17-09 09:37 PM by tblue37
In the 1980s I dated an older man with a graying beard. My older brother came to visit me during that time, and I was surprised at how much he and my boyfriend looked alike--for no other reason than because they both had graying beards, very much like Krugman's and Lula's.

In fact, both of them looked like both of these guys!

6. Doesn't it make you feel safer to have a President the whole world seems to like?
It does me, what a nice change from having the all the world leaders hate us because of that arrogant cowboy diplomacy.

8. One thing I notice is that Pres Obama seems to really enjoy his job.
He is always smiling and looks like he is having a ball.

I love seeing these pics - look at those smiles! Pic 2 is my favorite.

9. It is not Europe anymore...even Latin America is fascinated and excited
to have a trusted and intelligent man in the White House for a change. Freepers are now furious because Obama has been such a great hit everywhere he goes compared to the Chimp that ate our economy.

12. Wow, that is genuine mutual affection
I love that the world loves our president. As I looked at these pictures, I had flashbacks to Bush with world leaders and imagining what those leaders were really thinking. "OMG, what a gasbag! Have the Americans lost their minds?"
