“Always get married early in the morning. That way, if it doesn't work out, you haven't wasted a whole day.”
—Mickey Rooney
You might have missed it but Gingrich is trying to label President Obama's effort to restore American international diplomacy, a bipartisan tradition that was unbroken from FDR through Carter, as a reincarnation of Carter.
He expects this will be his ticket to a nomination.
A comeback for the guy that could have been a contender.
What it really shows us is that Gingrich is now channeling Mickey Rooney, and poor Mickey isn't even dead yet.
Of course the most obvious similarity is that neither one of these guys really mastered having a successful marriage. Once Newt has gotten over the embarrassment hump of failing at three marriages he will be on his way to catching up with Mickey.
But there are other similarities as well. Mickey had some success early in his career and then spent the rest of his life living off his name familiarity and his circus side show life. Newt won a few elections got to be Speaker and is now the guy who everyone wonders, "what really happened to that guy?".
Even Mickey's teenage movies had a story line that reminds you of Newt. He was always in the middle of some group that was facing a complete disaster and he and Judy would organize a talent show and save the day, golly gee it was really fun.
Newt brings out the same simplistic formulaic approach to solving world problems. Instead of holding a talent show he thought it would be really good fun to shut down the government.
And eventually the nation grew tired of the novelty and both became shadows of their former characters, occasionally coming out for bit parts.
As they reflected on how their present condition was a mere shadow of their former selves they both turned to religious conversion to relight the flame. Mickey Rooney was visited by an angel while eating a donut in a coffee shop and became a born again Christian. Newt converted to Catholicism only 19 days ago, a rather late point in life to establish your metaphysical identity for someone who promotes themselves as a serious thinker is a particularly odd move that will not find much support among the rapidly declining evangelical base of the Republican Party and that will provide for some awkward maneuvering when Gingrich decides to throw out his present wife and try to catch up with Mickey's marriage history.
