30 Hours of Sam Brownback?
Sometimes Senator Sam Brownback embarrasses the hell out of me.

It could be a good night for pizza delivery at the Capitol.

With a cloture vote expected possibly later tonight on the nomination of Chris Hill to be U.S. ambassador to Iraq, an aide to Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS) says the Kansas Republican plans to use all 30 hours of debate time allotted to describe his objections to Hill's confirmation. Sen. Brownback won't yield a single minute, the aide says, unless the Senate agrees to debate Brownback's proposal for sanctions against North Korea.

Can you even imagine that? 30 hours of Sam Brownback droning on about...I don't know, Opus Dei cookie recipes or something. And at first glance it sure does seem like blocking the confirmation of the Ambassador to Iraq until you get sanctions on North Korea is weird as heck, doesn't it?

Well, it is weird as heck, and doesn't really have anything to do with North Korea, or with Iraq. No, it all has to do with the fact Brownback swears up and down Hill lied to him when Hill promised he'd include a special envoy for human rights in talks with North Korea. Hill didn't ever do that, because talks broke down long before the negotiators got that deep into it.
