Obama is a Good President
Edited on Tue Apr-21-09 05:35 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
All presidents make mistakes. Good presidents over-reach sometimes but know to pull back. Bad presidents over-reach and fall off the cliff.

I have posted voluminously on the prosecution-issue. Throughout I maintained that president Obama was making an error, AND that he would correct it. That combination was sort of between camps.

Being a cynic, I felt somewhat foolish saying he would get to the right place but he's a good president so I felt the thing would have to settle down to the right spot, which is where US law always mandated it would go... the desk of the AG and no one else.

He's not a God. He did make an error. He sought a political solution to a legal question. I doubt we have ever had a president that didn't do that. It's almost a built-in pitfall of the job.

He is not a devil or a fool. He saw the position was indefensible if anyone bothered to attack it. Trial balloons drew fire and he quickly conceded the point. (When a monster like DiFi is keeping you honest you know it's time to reconsider.) It is not right to present a legal issue as a national-political-culture issue unless, like Gerald Ford, you are prepared to back it up with pre-emptive pardons. (A sole prerogative of the president, unlike investigation or prosecution.)

He's a good president.

2. The way I would put it - I believe him to be a good person, and will be a good president.
I also am unhappy with how the current direction of the torture stuff is going, but all in all, I believe he knows what should be done and is using both overt and behind the scenes mechanisms to do the right thing. As I said in a pretty controversial post this morning, if he drops the ball on the torture prosecutions, there will be disappointment and unfortunate fallout, perhaps.

I think he would have loved to not have to do the right thing
As would we all, sometimes.

But that wasn't in the cards.

can you produce any evidence to support this: "Throughout I maintained that president Obama was making an error..."?

9. I'm sure you can pick 'em apart, but...
I'm sure you can pick 'em apart, but these three are all quite balanced in maintaining the position to be untenable while not rushing to assume that Obama wouldn't see the light in short order.

Heck, I was in the minority on my own Poll!

11. I didn't ask for opinions, I asked for facts:
where Obama made a statement and then retracted it.

14. Bush never said Saddam Hussein was involved in 9/11. So what?
If you cannot take the plain meaning of the combined output of an administration then we bother following politics?

Edited on Tue Apr-21-09 08:02 PM by lostnotforgotten
That some here take such an extreme position is clear from the rhetoric of late.

Since when did being American mean that one has to agree with everything that a president does or says?

Equally important, since when does being a democrat mean that one has to agree with all democrats?

12. You obviously don't see anything except what you want to see.
The fact that I intensely despise the fan-club doesn't mean I despise Obama.

Unlike the fan-club, I don't think of the fan-club as interchangeable with the man.

My comments about Obama tend to be responsible criticisms on a small number of big policy points.

On 90% of stuff he's great.

Which must mean you're brilliant, of course! ;)

I hope you're right that the point was conceded, and that the error will be corrected.

No doubt there are political issues involved, but they can't take precedence over what's right (what's required for the good of the country going forward).

32. That's how I feel about him
I don't consider myself a "fan club" member; I realize that he's operating off of more info than I am when he makes decisions and that he'll still make wrong decisions. There is no law that says I have to agree 100% with what he does but even when I do disagree with him, I still support him.

35. That was a pretty good summary of how I felt on the issue
I'm a really big Obama booster and really like him and what he's tried to do, but I didn't like the initial soundings on torture and I'm not really sold on what comes next because I don't know what they will do with it. But Obama's got my confidence overall, so I'll see how this goes with that in mind.
