CNN) – Teen father Levi Johnston dropped a bombshell into the middle of the escalating family feud between Johnston’s family and the family of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, whose eldest daughter is the mother of Johnston’s infant son.

In an interview with CNN’s Larry King, Johnston, his mother, and his sister acknowledged that they have a lawyer and are contemplating taking legal action to protect Johnston’s parental rights.

“That is what we’re going to have to do next,” Johnston’s mother, Sherry, said Wednesday on Larry King Live. “We were just hoping that we wouldn’t have to,” Sherry Johnston also said.

But “that is the step we’re going to have to go,” Johnston’s mother said later in the interview.

The teen father said that he and Bristol Palin, Gov’s Palin’s daughter, do not have a formal custody agreement regarding Tripp, their 4-month old son.

While the young father and his mother at times appeared hesitant about the prospect of taking formal legal action, Mercede Johnston, Levi Johnston’s younger sister, seemed anxious to get the brewing custody battle in front a judge.

This is tragic on so many levels.

Levi J is much more credible in his recent interviews. His mom and sis, not so much. I can't believe that they don't have coaches, but they obviously don't or don't have any good ones or meaningful preparation for this kind of exposure. It's all too clear that Levi never looked into Palen's Rolodex for media contacts. This stage was scooped by Tyra Banks.

I've just returned from jury duty. There are so many stupid and selfish people there trying to be dismissed for bias or whatever they think will set them loose from a case. Hint: Get on a case as a juror. In a civil case, it will most likely be dismissed by a settlement and you are dismissed from the jury pool. On the other hand, you can play off any bias presented to you and you'll be thrown back into the pool until your required days run out.

They will totally exonerate the Palins and trash Levi's family. I hope he gets a damn good lawyer because he is going to need it. The courts are stacked against him to start with. I will wait and see if the Palins attempt to get sole custody of the child on the basis that his mother is a drug addict. They just couldn't have the innocent child in that kind of environment. Levi - no job and a meth dealing/using mother don't generally go on the "plus" column when deciding custody issues.

Bristol - no job either but Sarah's diva-ish grandstanding aside, the kid is probably in a safer home environment with the Palins.

I'm down in Santa Monica awaiting the birth of my fourth grandchild (this daughter's first), so I'm not directly in touch with Alaska sentiment, although I'm keeping track of my usual favorite websites. If you're really interested, keep an eye on The Mudflats, The Immoral Minority, ProgressiveAlaska, and Celtic Diva. I'm on a Mac right now and I'm a PC, so I'm not sure how to link, but if you've been following Alaska politics you're probably familiar with these people. There's been a lot going on up there, and Sarah's been making a total fool of herself, but Levi may be the one to ultimately do the most damage to her reputation, which certainly wouldn't hurt my feelings at all.
