It's a trap ! Congress should stay out of the torture debate. Here's why:
Some years back, several Senators grandstanded their way through the Iran-contra hearings. They laid out the facts, but in a very untidy fashion. Most people didn't understand what the fuss was all about. When the people involved were tried in criminal court, the case was tossed because the judge held that the guilty had been forced to give up their 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination. That's why Ollie North is on the radio today instead of behind bars. Notice that a lot of the people involved were never called to answer for their actions and went on to continue their efforts for Bush II.

Let the Justice Department sort this out.

1. I would mostly agree
I think congress should be making sure that the laws are made to clearly state that we do not torture, no wiggle room, no double talk, no excuses. I also think that the justice dept. should be doing investigations/prosecutions.

2. Perhaps Congress does these hearings for just that reason.
Look how the probe of the Justice Department firings is going. Anyone that should go jail got "get out of jail free" cards.

3. I absolutely agree
Here's what I wrote in another thread.

I originally wanted Congress to investigate the hell out of this, but I'm becoming more and more convinced that would be a mistake. If it's done in Congress, the idiot repukes will make it political. They'll have a forum for yelling, "You're criminalizing a policy dispute!" "This is just revenge against the previous administration!" or maybe worse "We needed to torture. 9-11, 9-11, 9-11!"

I think we need a mini-Nuremburg. Somewhere in the land, there must be 5 or 6 honest Republicans and conservatives who hate torture and war crimes. Maybe some judges or prosecutors like the ones Rove/Bush fired for having integrity. I hadn't even thought about the international aspect of this until I watched this video.

As much as I love some of our Congressional dems, imho, this is not a job for Congress.
