Interesting numbers from the Associated Press-GfK poll.
Edited on Thu Apr-23-09 07:02 PM by Drunken Irishman
I think they were glossed over by the article, so I thought I'd post 'em here for those who might not've looked through the http://www.ap-gfkpoll.com/pdf/AP-GfK_Poll_Topline_April_2009.pdf">pdf file.

58% of Americans approve of the way Obama is handling the economy, compared to 35% who disapprove.

59% of Americans approve of the way Obama is handling Iraq, compared to only 27% who disapprove (compare that to Bush last year!).

53% of Americans approve of the way Obama is handling healthcare, compared to 28% who disapprove (could be higher, IMO).

59% of Americans approve of the way Obama is handling terrorism, compared to 26% who disapprove (but Cheney says he isn't keeping us safe).

60% of Americans approve of the way Obama is handling the environment, compared to 19 who disapprove.

54% of Americans approve of the way Obama is handling taxes, compared to 35% who disapprove (but wait, I thought the teabaggers were a silent majority?).

69% of Americans approve of the way Obama is handling relations with other nations, compared to only 22% who disapprove (but he shook Chavez' hand!).

59% of Americans approve of the way Obama is handling unemployment, compared to 29% who disapprove.

74% of Americans believe Obama understands the problems of ordinary Americans, compared to 26% who don't.

71% of Americans believe Obama will keep the country safe (eat your heart out, Republicans). This is actually UP from 66% in February!

71% of Americans believe Obama cares about them.

76% of Americans believe Obama is a strong leader.

50% of Americans approve of the DEMOCRATS in Congress, compared to only 29% of Republicans when it comes to handling the economy.

53% of Americans believe Obama is doing enough to cooperate with Republicans when it comes to fixing the economy.

65% of Americans believe Republicans are not doing enough to cooperate with Pres. Obama when it comes to fixing the economy.

72% of Americans do not believe it is realistic to expect noticeable results on the economic front this year (which could bode well for Obama, as it provides him a cushion).

57% believe it's too early to tell if the stimulus worked (not a surprise).

Compared to Bush, 52% of Americans think Obama has displayed a far higher ethical standard (I think this number will only rise).

52% of Americans believe Obama is changing things at the right pace.

59% of Americans believe Obama is on television about the right amount of time (Ha! So much for them saying he's overexposed!).

63% of Americans have a favorable view of Michelle Obama, compared to only 8% who do not (the rest don't know or are indifferent).

52% of Americans have a favorable view of Hillary Clinton, 27% unfavorable (meh, still bitter assholes who haven't gotten over the 90s).

I think these numbers show why Obama has been able to keep such high approval ratings, even with all the difficulties he's faced. Americans genuinely like him and that's going to help him through some politically troubling times. We saw it in the primaries and I think we'll see it here. Now obviously there will have to be results, but it looks like Americans aren't buying the right-wing BS and that bodes well for Obama in the coming years.

1. 53% of Americans believe Obama is doing enough to cooperate with Republicans when it comes to fixing
the economy.

If there was the option...I'd have said he was doing too much.

The republikkans are only interested in blocking everything he does.
They're afraid he might just be successful and that would make them look even more irrelevant then they are now.

They could be part of the solution, yet they are only interested in being the major source of the problem.

3. Let's also remember that the numbers are a little slanted.
I, for example, am one of the 25% that disapprove of Obama's handling of the economy...because I think he isn't being aggressive enough, not because I feel his policies are bad like the Republicans say.

My disapproval doesn't mean I vote for him for re-election; he's still the best option out there and the job he's doing, although inadequate to my mind, is still a damn good job.

If he can maintain those numbers he should have no problem getting the rest of his plans through, and keeping the people on his side, because at least a chunk of that 25% will still back him when the time comes.
