3. It will still be spun that way
They'll say Tedesco ALMOST won in a "Liberal" district, ignoring the reality that it's a conservative district that was won be by a conservative Democrat for the first time in ages just two years ago.

11. Not on my local tv
station.. They said it was a predominently republican district that Tedisco was suppose to win and it was so close on Election night but the absentee votes favored Murphy.

I'm so happy Scott won and the referendum on President Obama is still postive.

2. Heh, heh.... So was the tipping point his taking on Sam Seder's
absentee ballot and all the negative PR furor that came (in the face of that from his challenge of Gillibrand's ballot?) LOL

4. I have my fingers crossed
I'm sure Murphy's the winner but I'm crossing my fingers in the hope that Tedisco just concedes instead of dragging this on. It sucks not having a rep all this time.

5. Well you can thank Working Families Party, Lefty Citizen Action, and the Unions
Who between them put thousands of volunteer hours, door-knocks, fliers, and phone calls into the race for votes that surely amount to many times the winning margin. Of course, why any of us bother with the Democrats looking like they'll bail on the Employee Free Choice Act and the public option on health care reform I don't know why any of us bother anymore - despite putting in some of those hours myself. Glutton for punishment, I guess.

6. I'll also thank Democratic and Independent voters who showed up at the ballot box as well as...
Edited on Fri Apr-24-09 08:43 AM by wyldwolf
.. members of the Columbia, Dutchess, Delaware, Essex, Greene, Otsego, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Warren, and Washington county Democratic parties who put in countless hours of leg work and phone banking and who selected an excellent candidate in Scott Murphy who appealed to the moderates in the district.

9. Sure, thank them too. But it wasn't the work of "moderates" that gave him his margin. Showing up
to vote would not have been enough.

12. *shrugs* - fine, let's see them win without us next time -
I'd love a little more free time. The way they've been acting, we might see what plays out under that scenario in at least some races, next time around. Have at it.

But all the progressive organizations in the world won't convince GOP voter to vote for a Democrat. Other factors do. If continuing to overstate your important role makes you happy, so be it.

15. You are simply wrong
Look at the numbers. Look at McCain's numbers among union voters vs his numbers among the general population in those demographics that Obama did not win. Many of those union voters are Rs or "Reagan Democrats" who routinely vote R. It was their union that changed their mind in this election - not the Democrats.

And Murphy's votes on the WFP line were roughly 10x his margin of victory. I doubt anyone will bother to do the kind of polling done after the Presidential to break down this race by demographic, but if they were to do so, I would place a $2 wager (all I ever bet for fun) that you would see similar results among those union members who voted on the D line as well.

I don't know of any organization of "moderates" who put out thousands of voter contacts to Rs and Is to persuade and GOTV - and it is old-fashoned foot, phone, and mail work that wins a special election or a close General election.

You keep crediting organizations. I'm crediting voters.

"For the first time in a long time, a Republican congressional candidate went toe-to-toe with a Democrat in a hard-fought battle over independent voters. This was hardly a common phenomenon in 2008, particularly in the Northeast," said Rep. Pete Sessions (Texas), chairman of the NRCC.

"In trying to win the NY-20 special election, the RNC, NRCC, and their Republican allies went all in on the losing gamble that voters would prefer their 'just say no' approach to President Obama's bold plans to get the economy back on track," said Rep. Chris Van Hollen (Md.), chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/capitol-briefing/2009/04/murphy_eeks_out_win_in_ny-20_s.html?hpid=moreheadlines

The independent voters who have routinely voted Republican went Democrat this time. If you want to credit a progressive organization for that, go right ahead.

16. But of course odds are we'll all fools for the work we do - and I do have to thank you...
...you have refreshed my memory as to how the Democrats can screw us again and again - and look to do so again - after we put in all those thousands of hours and $$: they simply ignore our results and attribute their win to some magical appeal to "moderates" - an appeal that failed once again among white men who were not union members, for one instance, in the General. But hey, who needs numbers?

But hey, thanks! You've reminded me again why I've drawn a line in the sand this election - which, given the political indicators, will be my last, since the Ds will go on to screw us again. I'm getting up there - I can use the extra time I'll gain from not working eight months a year to elect Ds who turn around and screw us routinely.
