Obama backs measure to restore fiscal discipline

President Barack Obama unveiled new steps on Saturday to restore U.S. fiscal discipline, including support for legislation that would require Congress to pay for any new programs by raising taxes or cutting other expenditures.

Acknowledging that he had spent heavily to confront a historic economic crisis since taking office January 20, Obama said the country was on an unsustainable course and would have to make hard choices to bring the budget under control.

"We came into office facing a budget deficit of $1.3 trillion for this year alone, and the cost of confronting our economic crisis is high," the Democratic president said in his weekly radio address. "But we cannot settle for a future of rising deficits and debts that our children cannot pay."

Obama's Republican rivals blasted the high deficits in their own radio address, noting that spending was so out of control the United States was even being scolded by France over its finances.

Please remind people of things like this when they go off on tax and spend liberals. We are the only ones who have ever been able to bring any sort of responsibility when it comes to the budget. It is a Democratic President who gave the largest tax cut in history and who is making sure our budget will get under control. Republicans are so clueless for all their talk and that is all it is about fiscal discipline they have not outlined one thing to do to get the budget under control. It sickened me that they balked at Obama having his Cabinet trim 100 million from their budget especially since it was not the only thing he said he was going to do. The little things add up. A 100 million there and couple of million there and next thing you have a billion in savings something the Republicans fail to understand.

1. One of my fav. things is seeing something that he talks about in his book...
.... coming to fruition.

This is one of those times. He cites "paygo" as one of the main reasons why we went IN to the Bush admin. with a budget surplus.

2. Exactly and I am glad that President Obama is going to use that principle to lead us out of the red
ink. It is funny that the so called party of fiscal discipline has never called for this or have put forth any good ideas. Kudos to the President and another nail in the coffin of Republicans.
