GOP: '100 new nuclear power plants'
Americans made fun of the French when Paris wouldn't join Washington in the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, but who's laughing now?
France, with its investment in nuclear power.
So says Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, invoking the "Freedom Fries'' of the war debate and making the case for "100 more nuclear power plants.''
That's the point of today's Republican Party radio and Internet address, delivered by Alexander, who once sought his party's presidential nomination.
The Democrats are attempting to portray the Republicans as "The Party of No.'' But on this issue, Alexander says, it is the Democrats who are saying, 'No.''
"When Republicans say, 'Build 100 new nuclear power plants during the next 20 years, Democrats say, 'No place to put the used nuclear fuel,'' Alexander says.
"We say, 'Recycle the fuel -- the way France does.' They say, 'No we can't.'''
