Obama's 100-day grades:
WASHINGTON - You can't properly judge a crisis presidency in 100 days, especially one that is changing policies and increasing federal spending as dramatically as President Barack Obama's is.

So consider this an interim report. Obama has proposed bold, yet unproven, actions to stimulate a recession economy. He has turned the presidential bully pulpit into more of a platform for persuasion. Americans like Obama personally, even if they are wary of some of his policies.

Obama's 100-day grades:

<snip>

Appointments. C

--------------------

How many appointments have the republicans held up?

For the rest of the report card:

1. These "report cards" say more about the people giving the report card...
...than they do about President Obama.

Meh.

3. So you dismiss this "grade card" because it has one C on it
Wow, that certainly says a lot about you.

I hate to break this to you, but the majority of Americans aren't sycophantic followers of Obama, but rather non-partisan independents who are, in the whole, more objective than posters on a Democratic chat board. And if you had delved further into that report, you would have found that Obama has gotten pretty decent grades, with a 3.0-3.5 GPA. Yet you bemoan a C on appointments. Well, I hate to tell you this, but many, many people view obama's appointments as mediocre at best, and in some cases (Duncan, Vilsak), downright horrible.

Your response is understandable, given your partisan leanings, but nonetheless, as skewed as the teabaggers who reflexively give Obama an F on everything:shrug:

6. You read a lot into a simple statement.
Maybe the statement was about the press.

7. I actually assumed that it was about the press,
The press are people too:shrug:

8. That's one hell of a response.
Particularly considering I didn't say anything about the C grade. And also considering the fact that you have no way of knowing whether or not I "delved further into that report".

Perhaps you disagree with the suggestion that these types of report cards say more about who is writing them than about who is being reported on. I know, it's a highly controversial suggestion on my part, which lays bare to the world my insidious partisan leanings. Obviously I missed the memo that that these report cards are all completely objective.

9. Given your dismissive tone regarding this report card,
I saw no other possible response. Perhaps it's the lack of intonation on the internet, but your post strongly implied that you disliked this report.

I actually think that the report card is a rather valid indicator of Obama's first days. A C, a couple of B's, an A

Yes, I think that these sort of reports say a lot about who is producing them. I think that this one says that the reporter is actually being fairly objective:shrug: Your tone implied that you were expecting a 4.0, sorry, but it would take Jesus Christ in the White House to get that sort of grade, and probably even he wouldn't get a 4.0.

12. Obviously I was being dismissive of the report.
Because they are worthless, no matter who does them.

Would I give President Obama higher grades than this report? Of course I would. But that's because I'm me, and my way of grading him would be different from the Poughkeepsie Journal's.

No, I wouldn't give him a 4.0. I think the suggestion that I would is tantamount to calling me stupid.

19. remember skinner, if you dont fully acknowledge his point of view
Then you are clearly trying to quash dissent. Dissent, of course, being the life blood upon which the giant juggernaut of progressive thought be feed.

Do not oppress him, embrace his crazed dissent. He is here to help. He is here to make things better. If you do not see this clearly and lovingly, you too are a goosestepping empty headed lemming cast into the side of a coin the flip side of which lives only the craziest of conservatives.

14. I just think Skinner thought the article has a conservative bent
I agree, since it complained about spending right away and saying Gates is his most important cabinet decision. While I agree with Gates's stance on some weapons programs, he's not one of my favorite picks.

:-)

But these folks are the "victims" of bullying, we're told...

Pretty classic case study of the form of this thing, in any case.

15. I thought it was unfair to give him a "C" on appointments because the Senate is
holding up some of them.

16. The most important grade is at the end. Being president. A-minus.
That's pretty good.

17. That's why I suggested that we give the media a taste of their own medicine....
I'm busy giving them a grade, and have written to several of them doing just that! :)

Here's some of the grades I have given out thus far, and I don't even have to justify them,
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=8371232&mesg_id=8371232

cause we all know anyone can justify anything (see justifying torture as a prime example)!

Although I think you're being a bit generous by not flunking all of the TV stations.

That's the USA TODAY outfit. They don't do news, they do "pap."

The Clinton appointment alone mitigates most of his missteps and screwups. B is a fairer grade.

telling the truth and putting ALL the spending on the same table?

10. The one hundreth day isn't until Thursday!!!
Counting from the inauguration, that is. The "First One Hundred Days" has always been a media-manufactured gimmick, but with CNN and MSNBC both planning "special coverage" of that day, this is getting ridiculous!

13. We all should make progress reports (that's what I consider them so far)
Edited on Sun Apr-26-09 09:22 AM by mvd
Grades from me:

Appointments: B-

(the C rationale wasn't mine at all. Yes, Obama loses a few points for withdrawals, but I could care either way about Gates. My B- is for Vilsack, Duncan, Salazar, and not bringing in a fresh economic team. Hillary is a big bright spot, and there are some other real bright spots in the cabinet like Solis and Shinseki. I'm not sure I agree with Chu on nuclear power (I live near a plant, and even looking at it is unpleasant), but he's very intelligent.

Domestic/economic policy: B

(stimulus plan good, education plan not so good, SCHIP good, stem cell research good, global warming plan good, budget deficit good for this economy, tax plan good but unfinished, bank plan leaves me wary (but not understanding all the details, I'll see what it does), health care plan will be better without having to overcome a filibuster, automaker policy maybe not good for all (as they are not one), would like to see NAFTA worker-safety provisions and I'm not sure I'll get that, drug plan should be more open to marijuana legalization, good vision for transportation and energy use, needs to do more on spy program and Patriot Act.)

Foreign policy: B

(Diplomacy has been brought back, and we are forging ties again all around the world. We no longer isolate those we don't feel are worthy - ignoring them does not help. Some deals with companies like Halliburton will be ended. Has ended torture as a practice. Think withdrawal from Iraq should go much more quickly, but at least he still has an end date. I don't think increasing troops in Afghanistan will help - the surge itself didn't help in Iraq - it was the different factions being able to work together. And Iraq isn't near the rosy place painted by the media. Closed Guantanamo Bay prison and released torture documents.)

Being president: A

(How could you not give him an A after Bush? Aside from a couple minor missteps, he has brought honor and intelligence back to the office)

Overall grade: B+ with my curve
