A “public health emergency” is being declared to combat fears of a global swine flu pandemic

Administration declares flu 'emergency'

POLITICO

In an unusual Sunday briefing at the White House, administration officials said a “public health emergency” is being declared in the United States in order to mobilize maximum resources to combat fears of a global swine flu pandemic.

The government said it will release 25 percent of its stockpiles of the flu-fighting drugs Tamiflu and Relenza.

“I wish we could call it a declaration of emergency preparedness,” said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napalitano, insisting that the same measure was taken for the inauguration and in cases of flood and hurricane. “We’re leaning forward.”

Napalitano, calling the declaration “standard operating procedure,” emphasized that you can’t get swine flu by eating pork.

John Brennan, White House homeland-security adviser, said there is “no evidence whatsoever” of bioterrorism.

The Centers for Disease Control lists 8 cases in New York City, 7 cases in California, 2 each in Kansas and Texas, and 1 in Ohio. In Mexico, where the new strain apparently originated, there have been over 1,000 confirmed infections to date.

Napalitano said briefings will continue daily for awhile. The CDC is to brief reporters by teleconference at 3 p.m. ET.

Richard Besser, a physician who is the CDC’s acting director, said tracking the flue will be "a marathon,” and recommended “frequent hand-washing.”

Besser said that officials so far have identified 20 cases in the U.S., and warned that "more severe" cases are likely to surface. He While the disease has killed more than 80 Mexicans, there have been no fatal American infections so far.

2. You're right. During a recession, we should ban the news.
How reasonable!

6. ban the reactionary rightwing...from involvement in mass media
they control the biz community, the military/police/judiciary, and ....hell, everybody's a rightwinger for the most part anyway. So, why credit them with innocence when they've proclaimed their guilt re: wmds iraq, wall street etc? Why believe their bs about 'swine flue' when they benefit from all the distraction? Indeed, they create the distraction...
It's stunning so many of ours accept the status quo regards the pigmedia. Stunning. Absolutely.....

4. I watched the briefing.
DHS director Janet Napolitano says it's a more bureaucratic procedure used to free up funding.

They are trying to get ahead of this, not create a panic-- and the media is doing a fine job of doing just the opposite.

7. "When in danger or in doubt, run around scream and shout"
Sorry, but I can't get worked up about this one yet. Twenty cases in the US? None of them fatal? Get back to me when a there's been a few dozen die in this country.

Really now, approximately thirty six thousand people die in this country from the regular flu that goes around each year, yet we don't panic. But jeez, get some of that swine flu, coming from south of the border, and people freak:eyes:

Meanwhile, what other news stories go by the board as the country is gripped by mass, pointless hysteria? Oh yeah, that whole thing about torture, prosecutions, etc. Gone, forgotten, down that ever lovin' memory hole.

Please people, get a sense of perspective.

I'm dubious it is really serious but both over and under-attention is a lack of perspective.

11. Not sticking my head in the sand,
I'm just wanting some reason more substantive than twenty non-fatal cases before I decide to panic. Hell, there have been less than one hundred deaths in Mexico, and 1200 cases at most. Again, these numbers are less than those of the seasonal flu that comes around every year, but people are already losing their heads.

Will I pay attention to what goes on and how this progresses, certainly. But it really bothers me that once again, as the issue of bringing justice to our government is dominating the headlines, all the sudden blind panic, for no good reason, sets in and justice will be lost amidst a wave of swine flu scare.

9. Not to worry, help is on the way
from a DU post

Product Description
In this book, the author examines the history and applications of urine therapy. This ancient Eastern tradition has only just begun to gain popularity in the West as a natural alternative to modern drugs and surgery. Urine therapy is the oldest natural remedy, and can be used either internally or externally to aid in a variety of ailments. This book is valuable because not only does it examine the research and verification of the effectiveness of urine therapy, but it also takes a more personal approach with its many insights and personal stories. The Golden Fountain is definitely one of the most comprehensive and convincing treatises on urine therapy available today.

From the Back Cover
Urine therapy...is an ancient Eastern tradition which is gaining popularity in the West. Devotees, who include the actress Sarah Miles, claim that it is the oldest of natural remedies and swear by its health enhancing properties. The venerable former prime minister of India, Morarji Desai - who was 99 and in excellent health when the author met him in 1994 - was open about the fact that he drank a glassful of his own urine every day. It was while he was in India in 1990 that Coen van der Kroon was given the opportunity to experience the therapy's benefits first hand, following an accident. Afterwards, he embarked on a long journey around the world to research its history, uses and efficacy. The Golden Fountain, the most complete book to date on urine therapy, is the result of those wide-ranging investigations. The author tackles his subject with sensitivity and conviction. He provides a comprehensive overview of urine therapy's history throughout the world, together with detailed case histories and a user-friendly guide to its practical application in relation to specific ailments. Swami Pragyamurti Saraswati, a strong advocate of urine therapy who teaches in London, has written an authoritative foreword to the book while individual accounts from people who have tried it and found it beneficial add a fascinating personal touch. As an intriguing do-it-yourself home treatment, urine therapy is often the subject of lively debate, but there's one thing that everybody agrees upon. It's absolutely free!
