Right-wingers, including some war veterans, are killing gypsies out of hatred in Hungary
While right-wingers in the US whine about a recent report warning that right-wing war veterans might be recruited to participate in hateful violence, a new New York Times story details how a wave of deadly violence against gypsies, a minority there, has embraced the nation of Hungary.

Who is killing and attacking the gypsies? Read this passage:

Experts on Roma issues describe an ever more aggressive atmosphere toward Roma in Hungary and elsewhere in Central and Eastern Europe, led by extreme right-wing parties, whose leaders are playing on old stereotypes of Roma as petty criminals and drains on social welfare systems at a time of rising economic and political turmoil. As unemployment rises, officials and Roma experts fear the attacks will only intensify.

Right-wing extremists are killing gypsies.

And among the suspects, guess who we have?

"the pool of suspects included veterans of the Balkan wars and Hungarian members of the French Foreign Legion."

Isn't that exactly what Janet Napolitano, head of Homeland Security, warned us against in the report for which she later apologized amid poutrage from the right?

That minority group could easily be translated in the future into Hispanics in America, especially illegal immigrants, or other groups being targeted by our own domestic right-wingers.

We should take the report seriously and not be afraid of denouncing inflammatory speech by the Glen Becks, Lou Dobbs, Rush Limbaughs, etc. In the media.

2. My Croatian inlaws...
...basically blame all of the worlds troubles on 'Gypsies.'

I remember telling my Wife's Aunt that we were going on a camping trip, her reply? "Why you want to live like Gypsies?"

The whole thing is bizarre to me.

3. Funny. My Slovenian grandmother used to the say the same thing when we all piled
in the car to go someplace (I was one of seven kids)... "You look like a pack of gypsies" she'd say in her native tongue.

4. The Gypsies I've known are very racist.
If you're not a Roma, your unclean. They reserve special plates in the cupboard for not Roma to eat off of. Very strange people. Very distrustful of outsiders.

10. ack!
That's a pretty broad brush you have there.

The Romani people follow the Hindu purity laws, that's why certain things are viewed as "unclean" or impure.

I don't know that I would classify their social behavior as racist. And history has proven they have lots of reasons to distrust outsiders.

6. Those gypsies are scary.
My son barely escaped being attacked by them. He was there with his Hungarian friend who warned him to cut them a wide path because they were dangerous. And they were.

8. some people have escaped from attacks by blacks, and whites, and Asians
I guess that makes those groups scary.

9. I guess painting an entire segment of a population negative along with fear led to these RIGHT-WING
attacks. We all harbor prejudices but there's no need to feed into the frenzy.

Speaking of language above there's always the "Jew someone" and "Welsh" slurs ... oh and don't forget "Indian Giver?" If or when a relative of mine would use those, I sure as hell wouldn't share it with "the crowd." :eyes:

Damn! I thought this was DEMOCRATIC UNDERGROUND?!?

12. They swarm you. A friend and I saved a young college-age guy in St. Petersburg
from a swarm of them. A woman and about eight kids.

14. It's terrible. As is the case with Turkish workers - or Georgians and Armenians...
Edited on Mon Apr-27-09 09:58 AM by Captain Hilts
people notice them and think they're not 'native' no matter how long they've lived there.

What did you expect me to say? I think this violence is justified?

Read "Bury Me Standing."

I guess you don't encounter them much in Sacramento.

17. I just didn't understand how your anecdote against the mean woman and 8 children was relevant
...to the issue of assassination and bomb attacks against the group.

16. They are reduced to begging because most people wont hire them
Hitler tried to exterminate them, but apparently nobody sheds a tear over it.

People hate them because they are different and people dont understand them.

Ignorance does that to people.

15. I have a hard time believing this
There is nothing scary about them, they are just different. If you treat them with respect, they will treat you with respect. If you treat them with disdain, they will act accordingly. Most Eastern Europeans are absolutely racist when it comes to Gypsies and treat them like absolute shit.

11. With universal military service in Hungary in the recent past, 'veterans' is not a special
interest group or demographic.

18. That's "veterans of the Balkan wars" not just "veterans".
And unlike the US, most places don't grant special 'veteran' status to those who put in a couple years of conscripted service in peacetime. Veteran refers to combat veterans - and Balkan Wars refers to the conflict in which ALL sides participated in ethnic cleansing, choosing sides by race or religion, and enmity between neighbors.

And as Hungary was NOT a part of the 'balkan wars', those there who are veterans of the balkan wars are people who jumped into a fight BECAUSE of racial or religious enmity.

so it IS a particular demographic.
