Man of the Night: Gavin Newsom--UBER HOTTIE!!!
Edited on Mon Apr-27-09 08:26 PM by vaberella
Wahhhh!! He's the current Mayor of San Francisco. This is the first time I'm seeing him on Rachel Maddow's show tonight and he's amazing. He's running for Governor of California and trying to get rid of Arnold. I'm rooting for him. He's smart, sexy...I hope to God single---but most unlikely. Wow..he's smart and he's sexy and I love him!!!

Wahhhh!! I'm a total Fangirl. Wahhhh!!! Talk about damn gorgeous..

He's married. Ugh!!

83. I think he's recently been divorced...
because of an affair with a fundraiser... which caused problems between her and her husband as well.

It's a sordid story, and I re-tell it... but I personally don't care.

I think he might technically be available now... is the end result of that discourse.

Apparently there are some who have an issue with his personal... issues. I saw signs of it on another thread. I can only shrug so loudly. Ahh well... let people decide for themselves... personal... frailty? Or, personal... weirdness. Or Villaraigosa, who I don't know a lot about.

Or friggin EBay lady or whatever her deal is...

18. SECOND MARRIAGE TOO! Not That It Matters... BUT Let Me Say This...
I recently visited San Francisco and since I'm a political junkie who lives in a very RED county in Florida, I made it a point to talk to LOTS of people out there.

What SHOCKED me the most was that many people told me that they were leaning toward JERRY BROWN! It was jaw-dropping to me, but they said Newsom was riding on the back of PROP 8 to get elected and that turned them off! Basically it was his ONLY issue.

I WAS shocked that Jerry Brown was even considered viable at all! However, I think Newsom "plays the game" very well and he has the charisma and looks that makes people vote for politicians. I will give him credit for standing up and speaking out about PROP 8 so loudly, but it's an issue that has made far too many in CA extremely unhappy.

I'm just saying what I heard, and given the way elections go... charisma sells very well and he's completely personable too. My daughter and I were tweating about Prop 8 about a month ago and he actually emailed her personally. She flipped out and was so honored... still I was surprised about the Jerry Brown thing.

He is a LIBERAL and was Governor once before, if I'm not mistaken. I know his father was & I think his sister too. I could be wrong... hey, I live in Florida, what do I KNOW????

28. For me the jury's out on Newsom
I liked the fact that he stirred things up with the gay marriage in SFO. Although before that he was unknown and I feel like he's built a lot of name recognition on that one issue. I don't know where he stands on other issues. I really didn't like him bashing Jerry Brown for being two old for the job, and I think his personal life is a bit of a mess.

As for Jerry Brown, well he kinda walks on water (for me anyhow). He's a true public servant, he could have retired nicely after being gov, and instead became mayor of Oakland - a city that could truly use his help. Now he's Atty General, which I think is a good fit for him. I'd actually prefer he stay in that position instead of running for gov. But he's very smart and has good politics.

CA is in a good place right now, we've got a lot of good potential gov candidates. The repubs have meg whitman (former ceo of ebay - nuff said), and a couple others. It's going to be interesting.

34. I AGREE With You About Jerry Brown... Have ALWAYS Liked Him... AND
apparently lots of people out there still do too! My politics are more in line with Brown, but then I'm a Boomer AND A LIBERAL!

I wonder if it will actually be a close race, because as I said I asked LOTS of people and as you say.. the JURY does seem to be out!

Only thing, SEX sells! I'm sure he's counting on this factor to win him lots of votes because he can "sell" himself very well. Saw him on Bill Maher not too long ago and he was stealing the show!

Time will tell, but I don't think I would count Jerry out from what I heard!

59. Me too.
Anyway I was working in Oakland (still am) when Brown was mayor. No, he wasn't able to accomplish most of what he hoped to, but the problems in Oakland are pretty intractable. And at least he tried. Nobody else cares about poor old Oaktown, certainly not the crowd of crooked cronies running the city now.

I don't hang around after work though. Jerry Brown moved in and tried to make a difference, at a time when Mayor of Oakland was not a step up for him career wise.

71. Maybe I'll Get Back Out There Again Sometime... CA Certainly Is MUCH
MORE to my liking as opposed to where I'm living right now. Can't afford CA though! Actually, where I live is a small town connected to Sarasota and it's a very "nice" place to live. Low crime, friendly neighbors and easy access to any kind of shopping. Most of us here really like our little community and wouldn't move. But the politics really SUCK!

For some strange reason, and I don't know why... most of us are Democrats in a Ruby Red County. I've lived here 24 years and it's the same for most others here. Everyone helps everyone else when needed. Very middle class, BUT across the Intra-coastal on Casey Key there are a lot of RICH people. Stephen King has a winter home here, my son works for a famous tennis player (lots of them here) and many celebrities winter here too. This county used to be the richest county per capita in Florida, but I think it dropped to 3 now.

My community isn't wealthy at all, but we get by and there are some very fancy houses around. But there are foreclosures popping up here and there. Recently had 3, but they have been snagged by those who have some money and they got some good deals!

Gotta run, hope to see CA again though! It's LATE here!

82. I drove a taxi in Oakland for 10 years.
Nearly all of Oakland is fine in the daytime, unless you have a run of bad luck. Something like 3/4 of Oakland is just fine in the nighttime too, unless you're luck runs thin.
When I was in Guatemala, I was advised against visiting Guatemala City, as the crime was deemed too harrowing by people. I'll never cease regretting believing the hype.
I think Oakland suffers from the same sorts of... statistics.

Jerry Brown managed to create an air of possibility in Oakland, and it was a welcome change. Then the dot com bubble burst, and the improvements in Oakland's economy began a slide. Time-wise, I could also blame the back sliding trends on the newly inaugurated Bush administration (and privately I still do)... but there might've been other economic factors, besides Bush, his economic theories he meant to put into practice, and the simultaneous Republican control of Congress, that made the economy so unstable and unfriendly to workers... not to mention those of us who depended on a broader base of clientele than that depended upon by Halliburton.

84. Exactly Loose!
Republican fiscal policy might -- I say MIGHT -- work in the very, very short run -- a few months or maybe at most one or two years -- but over the long haul fosters nothing but moral and economic bankruptcy, wheras liberal policy properly implemented always leads to growth and understanding and -- dare I say it -- happiness, prosperity and safety. It's been shown time and time again.

Show me a city in crisis -- ANY fucking city in crisis, anywhere in the country -- and I will show you a Republican-run administration.

38. I love Jerry Brown. He is an old school liberal. But he may face some problems...
Edited on Mon Apr-27-09 09:16 PM by Liberal_Stalwart71
First, no one under 30 remembers that he was governor.

Second, he ended his tenure as governor just when the Culture Wars were burgeoning; he's the poster child for what the wingnuts hate about liberals in California. I fear that some of that will come into play.

Third, people will wonder what he did as Oakland's mayor. Though he is well loved, what exactly is his record of accomplishments in Oakland?

Fourth, a Jerry Brown candidacy will bring out the worst in right wing lunacy.

Fifth, he's not a part of the Democratic Establishment. I hate DiFi and want her to be defeated, but I can see a scenario where the Establishment will come to her aid, and the corporate powers that be will make sure she is wins. She needs to stay in the Senate or leave politics.

53. Everything You Said Spot On... And DiFI... She Needs To Get Her Ass Kicked!!!
I make NO apologies for saying that either. I think she's ridden her Harvey Milk train waaaaaaaaaaaaay too long! I've wondered for YEARS if she's really a Democrat & all! She has LOTS of baggage and I don't know why people don't just blow the lid off with her.

As for Jerry Brown & the under 30 crowd, I'm not so sure. I was in Haight doing a LOT of nosey business and that's where I heard the Jerry Brown stuff first! That's what blew me away, I didn't think THEY knew, but apparently there's a movement there and they aren't that crazy about Newsom. Granted, I only talked to about 12 people in Haight.

I will admit that when I was at Berkeley I did find lots of kids who have their own agenda and have "no clue" about Viet Nam, etc. which AGAIN blew me away. Berkeley I thought would be politically in tune but found that there didn't seem to be a cohesive movement for any one issue, just everyone setting up tables hawking a multitude of issues. Talked to a professor there and he told me that he felt that only about 5% of the kids at Berkeley were even politically active like us Boomers used to be.

Then, we stayed in the city and here again, it was more Jerry Brown by a little!

Anyway, just my musings here and I have to say the trip was different than what I expected, but I DID enjoy myself greatly and am glad I asked so many questions.

I enjoyed Haigt, but was so turned off that it was just trying to be something that it will NEVER be again! You can't re-create what was and many level headed kids out there were plenty mad about the "homeless" dregs trying to be something they aren't! Seems to be a divide out there for sure!

91. Thanks For The Info... It's What I Was Hearing AND I Was NO Local So
I felt people did talk to me more openly. But then again, my perception may be wrong... OPENLY isn't something common where I live. I loved the experience of being among those who were more like me! I will say this though, to those of us who feel so confined I felt that many San Franciscans don't have a real clue what it's like to live in place like mine!

It would probably be the same in reverse if they came here!

Jerry Brown has always been way more aggressive. Gavin is as slick as whatever the hell he puts in his hair. FTR, Jerry Brown was a two-term governor and then left to run against Clinton (remember he won NY and Colorado and had Bill on the run at one point?) Ahh, memories....

Jerry is for the people. Gavin can be bought. (One example: in 2008 he initially supported Hillary Clinton, not Barack Obama.)

121. Jerry Brown
Edited on Tue Apr-28-09 06:15 PM by Rob Gregory Browne
Jerry Brown was once governor of California, as was his father before him.

When Jerry was governor, he refused to live in the Governor's mansion -- living in an apartment instead -- and would not ride in the official limousine. He chose to drive his own car.

He is very progressive and I'd love to see him take the Governor's seat again.

Gavin may be good looking, and I'll support him if he's the nominee, but I wasn't particularly impressed by him on Rachel last night. He has, to me, a vague used car salesman look.

77. Help! Ammunition please!
Too many of my shall we say "right of center" co-workers (well, three in particular) keep telling me that Newsom's policies are actually hurting SF, and they all point to WHAT THEY CLAIM TO BE a soaring crime rate and WHAT THEY SAY are fleeing businesses to bolster their stupid "arguments."

Can I tell you? I'm getting a little of tired of this crap. So help me -- please! -- to shut these bastards up!

Good hard data is preferred, because I am sick of saying, like a broken record "Hey Republicans! We won! Get used to it!"

Irony of ironies – everybody in my office lives and works in greater Los Angeles, but I suppose it is Newsom’s stated gubanatorial ambition that has my co-workers frothing at the mouth (and shaking in their shoes! LOL!)

Anyway, I want arguments. These idiots all think (they have actually said it to my face!!!) that the only thing liberals are able to do is make ad hominim attacks, or run away, or cover up our ears and sing "La la la!" -- which of course is bullshit! We all KNOW it is bullshit! So please help me prove it! Thanks a lot!

Newsom was single but he had sex with his friend's wife. It was bad. Since then, he married his current wife.

I'm impressed with Newsom. He done great things with green buildings and he knows what he's talking about on this issue. I loved his speech at the convention. It was much better than Brown's IMHO. I liked Brown when he was Governor but he was a disaster as Oakland Mayor. I'm ready for newer politicians to take over and not just recycling the older ones. I don't believe that Brown is more liberal than Newsom as some have suggested above.

But mayor of San Fran, hardly a way to be a political leader of America.....let's see if he can survive his second marriage for another 4 years.

I'm not saying you shouldn't vote for him, although you'll find over time that he's great at grand pronouncements - just not so hot on the follow-through. We're still waiting for him to fix Muni in his first hundred days. Just don't fall in love.

97. Not Being Sarcastic... But Voting For Someone Because He's A "Hottie" Seems
a little shallow to me. We as Americans seem to do it much too often. And other countries as well. Mind you, I'm NOT calling you out... he does have "IT" but given that I'm a LIBERAL BOOMER (which means I'm 62) I don't swoon much anymore! AND, I don't mind telling my age either. Just a personal thing, ask my husband!!!

We've been together for 44 years, I met him when I was 14 and "swooned" for him when I was 18! Kept him from being drafted though even IF I wasn't ready to get married! He was a "hottie" too so I admit I have been guilty when it comes to men! But not my politicians anymore!

I'm done now, headed to the beach to get some sun, and running late!

who constantly made bold pronouncements about all the great things he was going to do for the city - and then not only didn't follow through but wasn't even around (too busy vacationing and running for governor)?

And no I don't think Clinton deserved impeachment, nor will I vote for, or not vote for, Newsome (I didn't - preferred Gonzales) based on his sleazy personal life. If he actually followed through on his promises to fix Muni (worse), combat the murder rate in the Bayview (worse), wifi the city or ... if he hadn't got elected on "Care not Cash" (look it up - but if you care about homeless issues not without a barf bag) I might feel differently about him.

You spent your past posts talking about his personal life. My point was...if you have a problem don't waste it on his personal life since that doesn't make the politician. I think he's hot and that's as far as I go. Although on Rachel's show he made a great speech. I'm not from SF nor can I even vote in Cali so my political leanings to his success is "whatever". I think he has a great face and body and I have no problems saying. Sleaziness in sex life means nothing to me since so many past and present and I'm sure future Politicians are dirty dealers.

No offense to the OP as I know this was not her intent, but I worry a lot about people voting based on looks.

Case in point: Rick Perry

BEWARE of slicker-than-grease good-looking politicians with 100-watt smiles.

111. He's a slick bastard who...
wears way too much hair product. Having meet him on many occassions here, under many circumstances, I can say I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.

He is my Mayor, and you can have him. He was the "chosen" mayoral candidate of the State party, foisted on our City so he could use it as his proving ground. Nothing he has done has been about San Francisco or San Franciscans, it has all been about his own political future.

Any my City has suffered for it.

I, for one, wil be glad he is outta my town.

And I, for one, will be casting my Gubernatorial vote for Jerry Brown.

112. Call me old fashioned, but I think he'd look better with long hair, stubble, and a tie-dye.
What can I say? I'm old school San Francisco. :hippie:

Nevertheless, Gavin gets major props for standing up for marriage equality. Major props. He's going places.
