“You could make life a little easier for yourself by making that little change from ‘R’ to ‘D.’”
Vice President Joe Biden and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell were just joking around with one of their close friends. But now, in retrospect, their ribbing of Sen. Arlen Specter about switching political parties looks like some serious foreshadowing.

It was a Friday evening in Philadelphia last month. Biden had just wrapped up the first meeting of his Middle Class Task Force, where he gushed over Specter, all but crediting him with singlehandedly passing the White House’s $787 billion stimulus bill.

Biden, Rendell and Specter headed to a reception. And Specter's chronic problems with his own party became the punchline of jokes throughout the evening.

Rendell started it. Noting that Specter had supported the stimulus to his own “peril,” he joked: “You could make life a little easier for yourself by taking that registration card of yours and making that little change from ‘R’ to ‘D.’”

"When Governor Rendell talks about a change of registration..." Specter started to say.

"Don't make your decision now," Biden interrupted.

The Veep continued to pour it on, praising Specter effusively and saying that deep down inside, Specter was really a Democrat.

"These comments sound more like eulogies," Specter quipped at the time.
