White House Easter bunny: I'm a Republican

The bunny at President Obama's first White House Easter Egg Roll turns out to be a Republican, one who's given hefty amounts of money to GOP candidates. Colorado's Greeley Tribune has the story about Jerry Helgeson, head of American Eagle beer distributing in Colorado.

"My niece is Ellie Schafer, director of the White House Visitor's Office," Helgeson said, "so she makes arrangements for any visitors to the White House. She's been with President Obama for about three years, so when he was elected, she went to the White House." ...

When the first family arrived on the balcony, President Obama tried to talk, but none of the microphones was working. According to Helgeson, the president leaned toward Helgeson and whispered in his bunny ear, "Jerry, have you got a mike in there that works?"

You can see Helgeson's political donations here, including the $2,300 he gave to Rudy Guiliani during the last presidential race. About Obama, "I still don't agree with some of his ideas," Helgeson tells the Greeley Tribune. "But he sure has a nice family."
