The Washington Blade is Tweeting the Rules Committee hearings for the hate crimes bill today, and take a look at the bullshit coming out of the mouth of Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC5):

Foxx: "Why is it worse to go after someone who's gay than going after someone who's a prostitute?" 11 minutes ago from web
Foxx: "Should there be an amendment to this to say that prostitutes are a protected class?"
Rep. Foxx (R-NC) says "this bill takes us in the direction of creating thought police."

Oh btw, she's in a safe wingnut district. Foxx, along with Minnesota's batsh*t crazy Michelle Bachmann , were the two famous manhandlers of Dear Leader before the 2007 State of the Union.

1. Why is this woman comparing homosexuality and prostitution?
Not that I think there is anything wrong with prostitution, by the way...

3. Both are groups that have been traditionally easy to attack.
And the ease with which a group can be attacked justifies, in a "they were just asking for it" sort of manner, the attacks done to them, making said attacks all the more prevalent.

Mrs. Foxx is therefor presenting the prime argument that supports the position that runs contrary to her own. Ignorant people tend to not notice when they do this.

14. That's not the comparison.
The comparison is that both groups are seen by conservative reactionaries as entailing a degree of moral corruption. The same has been true, throughout history, of any group that has been disproportionately targeted for violent crime. This view dulls efforts to prosecute, or in some cases even investigate, these violent crimes. The phenomena may manifest itself differently with respect to each group, but the underlying cause is the same.

This is part of the rationale for "Hate Crimes" legislation. To recognize that this reactionary view is no justification for allowing people to be the victims of violent crime just because a segment of the majority population, no matter how big or small, sees them as a moral liability.

In other words, whether you or I see such a difference between prostitutes and homosexuals is largely immaterial. The people who would subject them to violence, or not care if someone else did, don't really make such distinctions.

4. She is trying to imply that like prostitution, homosexuality is a choice.
Of course, we all know that for a LOT of women, prostitution ISN'T a choice--it's forced upon them in many cases. And we also know that being gay isn't a choice. But these assholes start from a erroneous assumption that it IS, and go from there. They think that by pretending hard enough that Green is actually Purple, they can make grass change colors. I swear, these people are so fucking stupid that it hurts. Yeah, I totally woke up one day and decided, "Hey! I should be gay! That'll definitely make my life a lot easier!"

:puke:

12. I respect prostitutes a great deal and I fight for their rights as much as I do for Gay rights.
Edited on Wed Apr-29-09 07:28 AM by vaberella
Both people are suffering from huge amounts of oppression and distress in life although there's no need to "compare" them on the same level. Although there's no doubt they are both mistreated in society and seen by these far right misinformed religious zealots as abhorrent while they partake in both from time to time in many cases. It's like that whole Thomas Jefferson thing...

So in my book...that conversation you listed is ridiculous and disturbing to see that people need something to "go after".
