4. I could not believe the video posted of her the other day in which she

When she was a state representative, she claimed to have been "assaulted" by a couple of gay activists in a restroom at the capitol. She was also observed hiding in the bushes outside one day, "spying" on a group of demonstrators. When she realized that they had spotted her, she jumped up and trotted off in her 3 inch heels, leaving a trail of mud.

The voters in her gerrymandered GOP district love her.

48. I live in her town, and have occasionally seen her up close at public meetings.

I'd say she's weird, but not clinically insane. I think she's one of those liars who have the ability to believe their own lies, even while remaining aware that they're lying. That's not an admirable trait, but I don't think it qualifies as insanity.

I remember an interview the local small-town paper conducted with then-State Senator Bachmann, in which they focused on lighthearted, lifestyle-type questions. When asked, "What kind of car do you drive?", Bachmann replied darkly that she couldn't answer. Why not? Fear of retribution, she replied. She said people angry about her anti-gay marriage legislation had targeted her family. What was done to her family? Well, her brother-in-law's service station had been burglarized recently. (Riiiight. Must've been politically motivated.) So, a little paranoid-sounding, with a heavy dollop of Drama Queen thrown in. But that's still not insanity.

Once, at a public forum, I took my turn at the mike and posed a fairly bland and neutral question to the six attending state legislators: "Do you support or oppose Governor Pawlenty's proposals to increase state revenue by permitting more gambling?" Five of the legislators quickly answered in turn. When Bachmann's turn came, she just kind of stared and said nothing. "Senator Bachmann?", I asked politely, after the silence grew uncomfortable. She just stared, and didn't speak or answer the question. That seemed weird to me, of course, but not insane.

The infamous Bathroomgate episode certainly points to some sort of mental instability. I wasn't present on that occasion, but my neighbor Margaret was. Bachmann and another state legislator held a public forum in Scandia, MN, at which the main topic of discussion was education. Near the end, though, the people in the audience raised questions about Bachmann's anti-gay marriage initiative. Although Scandia's a rural, meat-and-potatoes sort of town, the folks let it be known that her anti-gay stance was unpopular with them. One retired farmer remarked, "I'm straight, but God made gays and I don't have any problem with them."

Bachmann grew increasingly uncomfortable and called an early end to the meeting. She retired to the restroom, while the attendees lingered in the lobby, chatting. After a few minutes, a piercing scream was heard from the ladies' room: "HEEEELP! HEEEEELP MEEEEE!!!". Bachmann burst out of the restroom, running in a crouching position, and stopped short in front of my neighbor Margaret. She looked into Margaret's face and exclaimed, "I was being held against my will!".

Two bewildered-looking women peered out of the open restroom door. One of them was tall and elderly, the other young and quite petite. It later turns out one of them was a nun. They had followed Bachmann into the restroom and continued the policy discussion, and they were astonished when she went into full panic mode.

Margaret's a retired health care professional. She says it's her professional opinion that Bachmann was in "an altered state" when she looked into her face. Although the incident made Bachmann the butt of many jokes, I've sometimes wondered if she might be a person who's prone to anxiety attacks. If so, she would deserve sympathy and not derision in this case.

So, anyways, there you have it. Plenty flaky, but not actually insane in my view.
