Funky CNN's Wolf Blitzer still calling it the "Swine Flu"
even after CDC and everyone else has asked that it be called by its correct name!

Guess they like the original name somehow!

This is what I hate about the media....talking to us like we are children.

4. H1N1 Flu

Please call it the H1N1 flu, say officials

U.S. officials said yesterday they may abandon the term swine flu, for fear it's confusing people into thinking they could catch it from pork - which is flat-out wrong.

"We're discussing, is there a better way to describe this that would not lead to inappropriate actions on people's part?" said Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"In the public, we've been seeing a fair amount of misconception ... and that's not helpful."

CDC scientists discovered the never-before-seen strain of influenza, a mix of pig, human and bird viruses - and while scientifically it's part of the Type A/H1N1 family of influenza, they shortened the name to new swine flu.

Immediately, U.S. officials rushed to assure people that it's impossible to get pig strains of influenza from food. But by last weekend, China, Russia and Ukraine were banning imports of pork from Mexico and certain U.S. states, and other governments were increasing screening of pork imports.

The misconception could cause 15 billion in loss of US export business!

12. Influenzas are often named after the place where they were first identified
(Hong Kong Flu, Spanish Flu, Texas A-Strain) - I bet if it had been called Mexican Flu we wouldn't be told to call it H1N1.

... and the impression I got was that he didn't like (understandably) the negative impact the name was having on the pork industry.

7. Meaning what? It's been constantly referred to as "swine flu"
Even here.

If they officially renamed it tomorrow, we'd STILL be calling it "swine flu"

13. I don't think importers of American pork are going to get confused
There are no dangers to eating pork, even if pigs WERE infected.

Besides which, the source is Mexico. And YOU'RE their greatest market.

So if YOU'RE not worried, then the rest of the world isn't either.

11. It IS a swine flu. Because it's the current bug, it's "the" swine flu.
There's absolutely nothing wrong or inaccurate by referring to it as such.
