As far as political moves go, nomiating Sotomayor is a can't lose
Either she gets confirmed and Obama appoints the first Hispanic Justice. Or she doesn't get confirmed and the Republicans block the first Hispanic Justice.

Hell, even a vote on party lines will look horrible for Republicans.

1. I don't think they have any shame. They already look terrible.
Just look at their poll numbers. They know the only people left who support them are people who despise Hispanics, too. They are hard core haters and they can't die out too soon for me.

3. The GOP is not interested in expanding right now
They are interested in proving who is the most "Reagan"

9. Fine, but the longer they take, the harder it is going to be to expand...
When they finally do realize they need to reach out to more people and moderate their positions, it'll be too late.

16. I fully encourage them to continue in their quest
to find the most ideological pure among them.

There can be only one.

6. I agree. Sotomayor is clearly the most politically beneficial choice

Kagan not so much.

We really need to drive a stake into the heart of the GOP-Hispanic relationship, minor as it is. Or possibly even an Asian.

We don't need another white Christian or Jew on the SC (politically speaking, thought I threw up in my mouth a bit typing that), although Cass Sunstein is my personal favorite.

11. Type 1

From what I've read, Type 1s can have a normal lifespan.

Edit: A fewer other links suggest otherwise, so I'm not sure.

17. I looked up her bio. Impressive. You DO know she's a centrist, right?
Even so, her credentials and career are impressive. Plus, it'd be hard for the Repubs to claim the moral vote in voting against her, since she's so impressive and a centrist.

But as a southerner, one of my first thoughts when reading her bio was...another yankee? Wouldn't that make the highest court full of nothing but nor'easterners and midwesterners? Then I go back to teh bio and think, wow. That'd be hard to beat. She made the American Dream happen, against all odds. She must be a serious, dedicated hard worker with a brilliant mind. Just what a Supreme Court Justice should be.
