1. I didn't see a video of this...
So I don't have an opinion from the text. But it was a bozo thing to say.

Frankly, I think Specter is dancing on an edge. And I'm ready to help tip him over with contributions to a Primary challenger. He needs to be taken down a few pegs.

2. The context suggests it was a joke. But nobody in a sweat cares about context.
Of the top ten hits, Google news links provided context in only one case. NYT has the entire ten minute interview. It was a quick answer meant to be snarky.

Q: With your departure from the Republican Party, there are no more Jewish Republicans in the Senate. Do you care about that?
A: I sure do. There’s still time for the Minnesota courts to do justice and declare Norm Coleman the winner.

Q: Which seems about as likely at this point as Jerry Seinfeld’s joining the Senate.
A: Well, it was about as likely as my becoming a Democrat.

Sorry people, it was a joke and it's getting the sensational reaction the MSM expected, even here.

:patriot:

3. It didn't seem like a joke to me.
I didn't see it online. I saw it on TV as it happened. He didn't seem to be joking.

But maybe I'm humor impaired. Or maybe he just doesn't know how to deliver a joke.

5. It was a joke, just not as funny...
... as the number of posters here spazzing out about it in another thread. Anyway, Specter's not a very good comedian--I don't think he's even delivered one really boffo joke since the Warren Commission.

8. I hope Sestak runs against Specter, BUT Specter cannot hurt us
now. He didn't replace a Democrat, he's just an addition to our party. He can help us by voting with us, but he can't hurt us by voting against us because it would be no different than him voting against us as a Republican. No change there.

That said. He absolutely SHOULD NOT be elected as Democrat. And if he keeps talking the way he has been and makes good on his threats to vote against health care, he will lose his seat; either in the primary to the Dem or in the general to Tom Ridge, who will probably be the Republican candidate. We didn't hold that seat anyway, so we don't lose anything. We come out right back where we started from. But Specter loses his fucking job. Either way, he loses.

Fuck you Arlen. I don't know if he was kidding or not about Coleman and I don't care. I'm still too pissed about this health care and "loyal Democrat" remarks to care about whatever else he's said.

13. No question people in PA will look to his mental capacity when he goes up against younger
people like Joe Sestak or Jack Wagner. I've watched him on the PA news channel (PCN) and in town halls he is really struggling. The campaign will wear him down.

20. This is why some countries have retirement ages
Arbitrary cut offs may not be the best deal- yet they exist for a reason.

Best example one might hold up would be Strom Thurmond- followed closely now by Robert Byrd.

Due to system constraints in some places, the only way to replace icons with more competant representatives seems to be to wheel them off on a gurney- or in a coffin.

Relying on their own sense of dignity and honor to know when to step down and pass the torch- just doesn't seem to work.

I hope that the majority of Pennsylvanians will be able to see that sort of thing.

12. He continues to rack up Dem outrage, which will in turn make him have to vote more Dem than he would
have to get elected. Keep it up Arlen. Healthcare and Gay rights are next on the agenda that you will have to vote with Dems in order to be reelected.

15. Specter is nothing more than a...
self-serving Trojan Horse attempting to protect his paycheck.

Neither he nor Lieberman should have any seniority and/or committee appointments.

Would someone from Nevada start a recall on Reid?

17. Other: The joke's on Arlen.
First he reflexively said "Seat Coleman", then he walks it back after remembering that he now has a D next his name, and on top of of that, he loses his seniority!

Definitely a bad day for him!
