****** DU action alert ******

Majority Report on AAR is asking that we take some action by writing to these guys and asking them some questions....

*** PROJECT MEDIA REFORM ***

On July 21st, 2004, Adam Nagourney and Richard W. Stevenson wrote:

“Mr. Bush has other factors potentially in his favor, several Republicans said. The economy is showing signs of strengthening, though it remains an open question whether that is happening in time to change voter attitudes about how Mr. Bush is managing the economy. In Iraq, the transfer of sovereignty has led to some reduction in American casualties.

But:

DOD numbers for US casulties in the 28 days before the handover (June 28, 2004):

Military Fatalities: 38
Wounded (no return to duty) June 1, thru June 29 : 177

DOD numbers for US casualties in the 22 days between the handover and Nagourney writing (as of july 20th) the above.

Military Fatalities: 46
Wounded (no return to duty)June 30 thru July 20: 201

EMAIL ADAM at adamnag@nytimes.com and ask him:

Why did he say there was a “reduction” in casualties?

Why did he want to believe this when it was so clearly not true?

Why did he not check it?

How does he sleep at night?

And why does he not know how to analyze a poll? Why did he not acknowledge the error in the sample of the latest Times poll. They asked:

Did you vote in the 2000 presidential election... If voted, did you vote for Al Gore, or George W. Bush?

The results?

Gore: 28
Bush: 36

Given that Democrats have a 3 - 6 percent advantage in affiliation, this means the poll was grossly wrong.

Ask Adam why he:

a) didn’t know that. Or

b) covered it up?

Finally, ask him whether why he believes he’s qualified to be a political reporter at the New York Times.

1. correction
re: "Given that Democrats have a 3 - 6 percent advantage in affiliation, this means the poll was grossly wrong."

Should be: "Given that Gore received more votes nationally, this means the poll was grossly wrong."
