NEW PROOF BUSH SNORTED COCAINE

While President George W. Bush's spokespeople are denying the allegation in Kitty Kelley's new book that Bush used cocaine, an ENQUIRER investigation has tracked down others who are making similar bombshell charges!

Yeah, it's the National Enquirer. So what? What do you think the Undecideds are reading? And besides, check out what Jack Shafer wrote in Slate:

I Believe the National Enquirer
Why don't you?
By Jack Shafer
Posted Friday, June 11, 2004, at 4:04 PM PT

Almost three decades ago, the National Enquirer abandoned the traditional supermarket tabloid formula of UFOs, bizarre sex, séances, gross-outs, Loch Ness-ish monsters, cooked-up stories, and celebrity gossip for a new formula mostly devoted to celebrities. Striving for the kind of journalistic accuracy that repels libel suits, the tabloid paid many of its sources and scrupulously reported and fact-checked its pieces about Cher, Liz and Dick, Jackie O., Liza, Henry Kissinger, Burt and Loni, and the original Charlie's Angels.

By the time of the 1994 Nicole Brown Simpson-Ron Goldman murders, the Enquirer truth machine had become so good that reporter David Margolick was toasting it in the New York Times for scooping the competition—and applauding it for spiking many of the false stories that appeared in mainstream media.

2. Well, let's see how this goes
I had no idea the NE was anywhere near considered legitimate on any level.
This kind of story also needs a face to do the talk shows.

7. Toby Rogers would be according to the link
I assume he's an NE "reporter". Oh well, as long as it's credible to some degree. We owe the SBVT big time.

5. Scoff at the Enquirer if you must, but
Edited on Tue Sep-21-04 04:01 PM by mark0rama
When they drop a bombshell like this, it's solid. They've got people threatening to sue them all the time, so they know the importance of vetting these things.

On edit: removed a redundancy with the original post. Maybe I should have read the whole thing first?!

11. It is important.
How many bored shoppers in the checkout line will see the headlines?
Millions and millions. Its a much bigger audience than the Cable TV stupedia that is so treasured here..

9. Like a hydra headed monster, he will be born again and again and
again.Don't bother the know nothings. They will think God gave him permission to do coke, so he will have a heightened awareness for the "terraists".

15. So it would seem
Too, too bad.

This is excellent. Even the people who don't buy the Enquirer
will see these headlines at the checkout stands. Even the ones
who aren't paying all that much attention to what is on display.
The subconscious will pick all of it right up. Kind of like * and cocaine. Riiight on up....

12. National Enquirer as good as Matt Drudge
There's no difference between Drudge and the Enquirer, so maybe the media will pick up the National Enquirer story.

14. I beg to differ with you.
The Enquirer is a FAR more reliable source than Drudge. I challenge you to find 3 stories that the Enquirer got actionably wrong in the last 10 years. Drudge screws up at least once a month.
