Kerry is not using the internet enough to get his message out
http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/09/20/red.blue.tm/index.html

<snip>

The campaign also keeps a close eye on the blogs, using them, just as it uses Limbaugh, to mainline information to the G.O.P. faithful. "Blogs are what talk radio was a few years ago," says Bush campaign communications director Nicole Devenish. Her staff members regularly write, along with the message for the talk-radio circuit, the one that will go out to blogs and websites that link to the Bush campaign site.

Bush staff members rely on technorati.com and truthlaidbear.com, which track political blogs and websites to see what items in local papers, on websites and in blogs are getting the most hits. "If a story moves up through the rankings and linking, we can know," says one of the Bush staff members assigned to alert the rest of the team about which stories are moving through the blogosphere. "We can get indicators about stories before they break elsewhere. It's like an early-warning system."

<snip>

But some Kerry advisers think he has missed an opportunity to rally voters to his cause using the Net. "I don't think this campaign really understands the new technology," says one. "Yes, they raised money with it, but they don't see it as an organizational tool." The reason, he says, is that the team still steers by the stars of the New York Times and the TV networks. Senior adviser Mike McCurry reads the Daily Kos and a few other blogs, but most Kerry aides don't and instead rely on one staff member to provide an overnight summary. The Internet is not their medium. "It's not where they live. It's not how they talk to each other," says the adviser. "The Kerry camp hasn't moved. It's where campaigns were 20 years ago. They are going to do it the way they did it in '88 for Michael Dukakis. They are going to do it on TV, but broadcast television is damned near irrelevant for the rest of the cycle. Things move too fast now."

That failure is strange because the Democrats have seen the changes coming from a long way off. It was Clinton, after all, who played the sax on Arsenio and talked about his underwear on MTV. The Democrats invented the war room, having learned from the evisceration of Dukakis that every attack must be answered.
------------------------------------------------------------

DU is also mentioned in the article, see if you can find it.

One thing I don't understand is that Bush always plays to his base, and it seems to work, yet the democrats don't do that. If it works for Republicans, why won't it work for Democrats. I personally think Kerry should start playing to his base more and work on getting out the vote, instead of using a message aimed at people who don't bother to listen to ANYBODY(ie undecidedes). So stop worrying about how you appear on CNN, and start talking to your base(ie DemocraticUnderground).

2. Maybe Kerry should start posting on DU
to get his message out better. It would also make it much easier for us to give him useless advice.

7. yes hes using the internet
but is he using it effectively? I get those same emails from Kerry, and about 99% are, GIVE US MONEY(which i don't have). I think they need to think of better ways to use the internet to get their message out.

8. All they do is ask for money
I took myself off the DNC email list because that's all I got from them. That's not internet organizing.

12. Campaigns run on money
Here we have a complaint about getting the message out with a massive disconnect about what it takes to do that. Along with their appeal have been reams of material that they hope YOU will help dissiminate.

What role do you think you play in this election? What is YOUR responsibility?

18. with rare exception I never had the DNC do anything but ask for money
they never asked me to organize in any other meaningful way. I don't have the financial resources to contribute to campaigns yet, so their list was a waste of time. I'm spending a huge amount of time working for Kerry. Time and talent are what I can give and they never asked me to contribute any of those things. Asking for money is not organizing.

23. I'm asking
Use your own inituitive and talent in your own community, in your own workplace and get busy. Stop blaming the Kerry camp for your own lack of inituitive. There is plenty you can do in your own town.

6. His website is pretty weak
Edited on Tue Sep-21-04 04:17 PM by Kilroy003
I hate to say it, but if you compare Nader's site to Kerry's, it looks even worse. I was trying to convince a friend of mine to vote Kerry instead of Nader last week. He suggested comparing the sites. I won't knock Kerry's site too much but I will say that the comparison did little to help my case in this particular debate.

11. yeah but what does that mean
i think it means that people like me go there looking for something new. They're not using the internet enough to organize people to do things. I went to two Kerry meetups, and all I heard was "How can I help" and NOBODY knew. We just sat talking, giving suggestions where to look.

15. Theirs is a huge site with reams of material. Folks have access to this.
Your conduct at the meetup is YOUR responsibility. What you do in your community to organize is YOUR responsibility. In Bethesda, where I sell my wife's paintings on Sunday there is an army of Kerry folks registering voters and passing out Kerry material. Sounds like your weakness in this area, not Kerry's. Do better!

14. That fact can be read both ways.
If that many people are checking out his website, you'd think his advisor's would suggest updating it. Or, at the very least, tweaking it so that it's not so incredibly mundane.

Here are Kerry's highlighted issues;
Children & Families
Civil Rights
Economy
Education
Energy
Environment
Health Care
Homeland Security
National Security
National Service
Rural America
Science and Technology
Stronger Communities
Veterans
Women

Now, compare that list to Nader's issues;
Affirmative Action
Agricultural Policy
Assets of America
Bush's Record
Civil Liberties and Constitutional Rights
Consumer Justice
Corporate Crime
Education
Electoral Reform
Environment
Fair Taxes
Fair Trade
Federal Budget
Health Care for All
Immigration
Iraq War & Occupation
Jobs
Media Bias and Concentration
Peace
Poverty
Rural Policy
Worker's Rights

The difference is striking.
What is Kerry's stance on Corporate Crime, Media Bias and Concentration, Electoral Reform, Fair Trade? Does he even have a position on these issues?

19. What do you think is the base?
In my opinion Kerry is saying all the right things about what Dems really care about. DU is hardly the base of the party. There are many here who are not Democrats.

24. Why do you think we are not the base?
People that post here are some of the most hard-core democrats there are. We are the ones who will do whatever they ask of us, thats why they were able to raise so much money, because we gave it. We are also the ones who are Kerry's strongest defenders. Whenever something bad comes out about Kerry, the first place I go to get the counter message is DU. I don't know how much more of a definition of a base you can get.
