1. The question I have is...

why was he released six months early?

I signed up for six years, but got out three years early (in 1976) and given an honorable discharge, but that was because the military wanted to trim it's ranks and because I was busted twice for pot (two weeks apart) and this was their way of trimming their ranks and saving the money of a court martial by offering me a HD in return for an early out.

Even though I was given a discharge, on the third page (thereabouts) was written "insubordination".

Has anyone in the media had a chance to see a copy of ALL of W's DD-214 yet?

Thanx for this link and a belated WELCOME TO THE DU and check out the "unofficial" DU slang dictionary here:

the article gives the Powell quote.

“The policies — determining who would be drafted and who would be deferred, who would serve and who would escape, who would die and who would live — were an antidemocratic disgrace,” Powell wrote. “I am angry that so many of the sons of the powerful and well placed … managed to wangle slots in reserve and National Guard units. Of the many tragedies of Vietnam, this raw class discrimination strikes me as the most damaging to the ideal that all Americans are created equal and owe equal allegiance to their country.”

I LOVE IT.

Man, that's a GREAT article. Send it to any of your friends who are in the service. Well written, good summary.

4. He was indifferent to the sacrifices of our soldiers then
and he is indifferent to their sacrifices now. He skipped off to pursue a political career while others fought and bled in Vietnam and he is using our soldiers sacrifices, 1000+ killed/7000 wounded, to further his political ambitions now.

5. Very Interesting to See This in the Air Force Times
My father was in the Air Force and my mother still receives the AFT. Contrary to my own idea that something called The Air Force Times must be a party-line kinda of rag, I have seen recently and see in this article that it actually has some spunk. However, I read the replies to this article and, wow, it sure stirred up some damn outraged Bushites. It looks like the Times readership is a lot more conservative than the paper's staff.
