6. Do we remember Roger Stone?
What the world watched was a GOP melee. When Geller walked out of the room with a sample ballot, the crowd accused him of stealing a real one and responded as if he had just nabbed a baby for its organs. Geller says he was pushed by two dozen protesters screaming, "I'm gonna take you down!" Luis Rosero, a Democratic observer, claims he was punched and kicked. Republicans dispute the charges, but video cameras caught scenes of activism that had morphed into menace. The organizers in the RV outside, who GOP protesters have told TIME were led by hardball Washington strategist Roger Stone, had phone banks churning out calls to Miami Republicans, urging them to storm downtown

Roger Stone

<>

AKA Roger J Stone

Born: c. 1951

Gender: Male
Ethnicity: White
Sexual orientation: Straight
Level of fame: Niche
Executive summary: Campaign consultant, GOP dirty trickster

Longtime political operative and no stranger to dirty tricks. Worked for Chuck Colson in 1972 at the Committee to Re-Elect the President (i.e. Nixon). Helped strategize for the Reagan presidential campaign and Arlen Specter's Senate campaign. Worked on Bob Dole and Donald Trump's unsuccessful presidential campaigns. Also appears to have been helping Al Sharpton's 2004 presidential campaign, for some reason.

In 1996, Roger and his wife Nydia purportedly placed an ad in Swing Fever magazine looking for single men and couples to join them in group sex. According to reporting in the National Enquirer and the Star, the copy proclaimed:

C-161,787-DC* INSATIABLE COUPLE

33. Is it even clear that Stone is straight?
I know the swinger aid claimed it was his wife who was bi -- but when I was Googling earlier today for Stone's political connections I kept finding other implications as well.

Stone was best friends going back to adolescence with Terry Dolan, with whom he co-founded the National Conservative Political Action Committee in 1975. Dolan died of AIDS in 1986.

Stone also considered himself a protege of Roy Cohn -- yes, Joe McCarthy's Roy Cohn -- who died of AIDS in 1980.

And I happened on an article about gay conservatives which says, "Republican political consultant Roger Stone notes that although most gay political activists are Democrats, gays could become a significant factor in Republican politics if the Party hews to a libertarian line on social issues. Stone adds that the Republican Party could be a natural place for gay activists if they are willing to stick to the Republican Party's traditional role of "keeping government out of your pocket and out of your private life." (http://www.publiceye.org/magazine/v10n1/gaycons.html)

Maybe Stone as a swinger simply has a natural interest in keeping the government out of his private life. But I'm really starting to wonder about these New Right types -- like "Buckland's" former associate at the Southeastern Legal Foundation, Matthew Glavin, who got into trouble for groping a park ranger at a National Park. (See http://www.bartcop.com/0296.htm) Do they *all* have kinky sex lives they're desperately trying to hide?

(And no, I'm not saying homosexuality is kinky -- just the twisted way these guys go about it.)

35. A Roy Cohn connection??? Beautiful!
Hands down one of the most evil men of the 20th century. And he's seen it all. The satanic version of Forrest Gump. Very fascinating. On a radio show I listenend to a while back, the host claimed to have met him, and he described it as 'looking into the eyes of the devil'.

A little background at this link. And Cohn died in 1986, closeted to the bitter end:

50. And do we need to be reminded about J. Edgar Hoover? Who knows
Edited on Wed Sep-22-04 11:28 AM by KoKo01
how far these tentacles reach. How many FBI followers of Hoover might have been supporting "odd activities" after his death, carrying on the legacy. How many files on congresspersons were left open and added to as new folks came on board. The dirty tricksters in the Repug party go back before even Atwater. And there's always some sexual preference connection.

56. Yes, that's right!
After McCarthy's career died in that courtroom after making an ass of himself, Hoover hired Cohn to do his dirtywork, i.e. harass RFK. Hoover tried to intimidate RFK, but he didn't blink. Instead, came up with some interesting stuff on Hoover and his, um... lover. Hoover was pissed that RFK punked him out, and fired Cohn.

It's amazing, pull up some of the nastiest people of the last half century or so, and you'll find Roy Cohn. Did he know Karl Rove?

I read the Enquirer every week up until this year, when they slicked up their paper stock and pumped up boring PR-generated lifestyle stories in an effort to become less tabloid. Plus, it's an indulgence I can't afford thanks to Bush's economy.

But my defection hasn't changed the fact that, as they say, it's America's most-read newspaper. If you want to know what middle Americans have on their minds, and what they think about it, you need to follow the tabloids.

The tabloids claim that Mr. Stone and his wife, Nydia, placed messages on an X-rated Internet site and ads in sex magazines seeking male and female partners. They said photographs of a shirtless Stone and his wife in a sexy black lingerie also appeared in one magazine.
Said Mr. Stone: "The tabloids offer a published photo of me in an amateur bodybuilding contest in which I competed three years ago and a decade-old photo of my wife from her professional modeling career.
"We deny this vile caricature that is being peddled to destroy our lives."
The Post quoted Mr. Stone as conceding that the bills for the postings on the Internet site were paid for with his credit card. He told the newspaper the post office box number listed on the Internet site belonged to him, but had been improperly obtained.

32. Old Village Voice article about Stone
Alive now in only seven states, the party's remnants just offered their ballot line to Nader, which could also wind up benefiting Bush. The saga begins with a baby, allegedly born more than four decades ago. Incredibly, just as Bush backers in 2000 used an illegitimate-child scandal in South Carolina to smear John McCain, longtime Republican dirty-tricks operative Roger Stone was simultaneously using just such a scandal to undermine Buchanan.

Stone, who also spearheaded the pro-Bush mob shutdown of the Miami/Dade recount in 2000, says now that he "has no specific recollection" of strategically employing the Buchanan baby story. But a Voice investigation reveals that he pushed it aggressively on reporters early in the 2000 campaign, then just let it hover over Buchanan, who was nose-diving so badly toward November that no explicit threat of a scandal story was even needed.

"Everyone who worked for Nixon knew about" the alleged Buchanan baby, says Stone, adding that he "lived with it through two Reagan campaigns." Stone and Buchanan were aides to Nixon and Reagan, and Stone, also a Bush I campaign veteran, was rewarded for his subterranean 2000 efforts with an appointment to the Department of Interior transition team, which he parlayed into a multimillion dollar business as an Indian gaming consultant (see Voice, April 19).

The Stone-inspired Reform infighting served multiple Bush interests: It killed any possibility of a third Perot run, blocked the candidacy of former Connecticut governor Lowell Weicker, and forced out the party's only elected official, Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura. Buchanan's vanishing act—after Stone cajoled him to run Reform—left nearly a dozen party leaders contacted by the Voice convinced that he and Stone were conscious agents of doom.
