Anti-Americanism is at unprecedented levels (AFP)
Anti-Americanism has affected previous administrations during the Vietnam war and the deployment of nuclear missiles in Europe in the 1980s, according to Melvyn Leffler, a professor of American history at the University of Virginia, in an article for Foreign Policy magazine.

"But the breadth and depth of the current anti-Americanism are unprecedented," he said.

(snip)

The Massachusetts senator easily beat Bush in 32 out of 35 countries asked by the Globescan institute for a survey released this month.

Kerry wins in countries that opposed the Iraq war -- 64 percent to five percent in France, 74-10 in Germany, 61-16 in Canada -- and those in Bush's "coalition of the willing" -- 47 percent to 16 percent in Britain and 43-23 in Japan.

The world wants Kerry to win; and America needs him to win.

1. Not so much anti-America as anti-Bush
I think there's a big difference there. I'm not saying that America is everybody's favourite country because it's definitely not, but Bush pushes it to the extremities.

3. Right -- not all of the people, but the policies of Bush administration
I think it's about the actions of the American government in Iraq, and foreign policy in general. The article ends with a quote about American having to defend its morality as a nation in ways our founding fathers did -- showing other countries that ours is not "bad."

Thanks to Chimpy.

it will be firmly Anti-American, not just anti-Bush.

8. I completely agree
It is anti-Bush now, but if Bush gets re-elected, it sends some very bad messages to our allies (if you can still call them that, after how Bush, the Republicans and FReepers treat and talk about them).

It tells them that we, as a nation and as Americans, support what Bush is doing and agree with it.

and, it will indicate to them that for the next four years, things will only get worse and our relations will only become more strained.

5. yeah
the healing will begin on 11/3 if the election goes the way it should. Most of our old allies will come running back. There will be rejoicing in the streets world-wide.

16. If *Bush manages to get another four years, God help us all
THEN, it will be anti-Americanism to the fullest directed at us all for allowing it to happen.

11. I strongly object to this use of the term "Anti-Americanism"
It is my belief that disagreement with and founded dislike of the administration do not constitute Anti-Americanism. The above is a recent redefinition of the term and I don't like the implications at all.

Worse, if they continue to equate this we might get a real problem with real Anti-Americanism.

12. But there is real anti-Americanism -- and lots more of it
It used to be just from the Euroleft, now everybody's quoting from their Great Satanist bible.

It's as hard to find a conversation with a foreigner about how fat, ignorant, arrogant, racist, murdering, barbaric, exploitative and parochial Americans are as it is to find the nose in front of your face.

And their list of evidentiary crimes does not begin with Bush -- it starts with the Indians, or Hiroshima or Iran or whatever.

Doubtless you are right in thinking that he has pushed former supporters into the anti-Bush camp you describe, but he has also converted many fence-sitters to the long-standing anti-American dogma.

17. I don't get it
Do you deny that what I say is true? It's just out there. People really say these things, and often. I feel like I've had the same conversation dozens, perhaps hundreds of times. Both online and in person. And I assure you, it's gotten much more frequent, personal and vitriolic with Bush's bungling.

Or are you referring to the anti-American stereotypes?

13. If they were "anti-American", why would they bother to be pro-Kerry?
They are anti-Bush, that's all.

15. but if Smirk worms his way in..
The rest of the world will take that as a sign that the American PEOPLE approve of all the lying, carnage, & cheating and this overall criminal administration.

Then, we are f**ked.
