Tonight at the rally, the SS questioned me about my 864304 shirt.
It was at the Kerry/Edwards rally in Orlando. I wore my 86 43 04 shirt and they thought it was suspicious. LOL... They literally took me aside and had me explain what it meant.... I think they were thinking that 86 meant kill the dude. After about a 5 minute grilling I finally convinced them that it meant NO BUSH. Weird!

16. In the case of a Bush...
... would probably require more than that... silver bullets, wooden stake, blasted out of the air lock into space. I dunno, whaddaya think it would take for Babs to shuffle off the mortal coil? :wow:

Edited on Tue Sep-21-04 10:52 PM by zulchzulu
86 43 04 = Kill Bush in 04

That would be what I would see in the message.

Oddly, having dealt with the Secret Service recently when Kerry visited Madison and I had a press pass, I could see their point in at least asking you about it.

The "86" made them step up. While I agree with you that you should be allowed to wear anything you want, I'm pretty certain there are a lot of nutjobs looking to kill Kerry or Edwards. I can see by the look in their eyes.

Maybe it's because they wanded me every time I had to take a wizz and could see the pot buzz from a couple weeks before with their pocket eye scanner.

86 does not mean Kill.... It was a punk ass SS guy, the same type of SS that questioned Mike Moore in front of the Saudi Embassy, and he did it to bust my chops..... I told him 5 times it meant No Bush but he kept saying he didn't see it that way. I really was getting worried that this guy would ratchet it up to the next step of questioning....

I know the Secret Service (while they may seem like complete assholes to you with your shirt and whatnot) are just doing their job.

They didn't kill you or use a secret needle in your arm...wait... did you check?

No really...after seeing the shit front up and in my face recently, I know they are really just doing their job. I'd rather them check for nutjobs than let them in to kill Kerry. Seriously...

If it was a Bush "rally", you would have been in a paddy wagon in chains headin' downtown fer the evenin'.

29. Just doing their job
Q: "Would you take a bullet for Bush?"
SS Guy: "Absolutely I'd do it without thinking about it, its our job to protect the President no matter what."
Q: "would you vote for Bush?"
SS Guy: "No, I'd rather take another bullet!"

7. I've heard "86" used in movies as a term for offing someone
but I also used it about 50,000 times when I was a line cook at Applebees. Obviously the SS never worked in food service.

20. 86 is a restaurant term-something is off the menu
that's where I always heard the term.

if you 86 the jambalya, it means you take it off the menu because it's SOLD OUT.

...which seems an apt description of Bush and his corporate crooks and our need to remove them from office via the November elections.

9. I want to laugh, but...
It's all about intimidation. We are the new Soviet union. They are the goon squad. Shit, when we can't even secure the Holland Tunnel for the citizens who go to work every day, but we can find the money and time to secure our god's chosen son of a leader, then we have a serious problem with priorities. Duh. Nothing you didn't already know.
Funny, though, how for us pot smokers, this has been going on since the seventies. Nothing new for me.

14. Yep. I had to explain to my european friend who visited..
.. that she should not take photos of the nearby Navy Ships (tho they're really cool and photogenic), a police car, etc. I also told her to be careful how she jokes about Bush, etc. (they all hate Bush where she is from).... she was shocked, and said it reminded her of things in Europe's past that they would not want to repeat. Hard to explain to someone how many freedoms we have lost, and yet.. why Bush is still running neck and neck with Kerry.

86'd? I thought that meant tossed out of a nightclub.

23. Obviously.
"86" has always meant to "throw out", "exit quickly", etc.

Per phrases.org.uk:

"Listening to America" by Stuart Berg Flexner (Simon and Schuster, New York, 1982) has several pages devoted to "Lunch-Counter Terms." Mr. Flexner says, "Since the 1850s waiters and cooks have been communicating by verbal shorthand..."

There are several terms listed including numbers such as "86." "86, rhymes with and means 'nix,' usually called out from cook to waiter or waitress, meaning 'we're all out of it, we don't have any.' Also used to mean 'no sale' and as a code meaning a person is not to be served, because he is broke, drunk, etc."

There are lots of alternate theories, but this seems the most likely.

By contrast:

DEEP SIX -- "In oblivion; discarded. The standard usage is 'give him the deep six,' probably in a macabre allusion to the practice of digging graves six feet deep or of burying people at sea in six fathoms of water." From "Dictionary of Cliches" by James Rogers (Ballantine Books, New York, 1985).

(Same source.)

Perhaps next time you should ask him if he understands the phrase "Good enough for government work".

31. All presidential candidates
get the Secret Service as protection until the election. I think it's smart. Not only are both sides whipping everyone into a frenzy and there definitely are dangerous people 'out there,' but it's a good chance for the SS personnel to work with the person who could be their new boss. That's perfect 'cause every vote counts and I can imagine the SS is tired of * and his bar-hoppin', probation servin' daughters.

30. Highly appropriate
86, to me, means throwing a drunk out of a bar.

My friend was 86'd from the pub for spilling beer on a Republican-looking blonde chick--two days before my friend shipped out to Baghdad.

Yeah, let's 86 the drunk in the White House... We'll talk about "deep-sixing" after the treason trials.

Then there's the abortion pill: "R U 4 86ing that kid?"
