Doughnuts with Republicans
So I'm at my friendly neighborhood coffee/donut shop, here in Iowa, and I listen to two grizzly old guys talking about the elections. Normally, I would have set them straight, because I almost always do, when I come across this situation. However, I was in a hurry, and my young son was with me, so I just thought I'd listen and see how much stupid shit they'd say.

They didn't disappoint.

For all of you who don't want to visit Free Recraplic, where you can hear this stuff ad nauseaum, what follows is the "voice" of the people -- a.k.a. -- the product of ignorance and talk radio:

A:"Yeah, some guy called me -- from the Kerry campaign -- I told him I was voting for Bush, and boy that shut him up."

B: Chuckle Chuckle

A: "He just wants to tax everything, you know. Tax, tax, tax. And take our guns away. You know the NRA put out a newsletter that told about(name I didn't hear) -- well she's big gun advocate* in Austrailia."

B: "For or against?"

A: "Against -- and now people in Austrailia can't own guns at all. Not even for HUNTING."

B: "No kidding."

A: "Yeah. And then Kerry wants to take our guns away, and he's parading around with a shotgun like he's some kind of hunter. He probably couldn't hit the broadside of a barn."

B: "Yeah, and then he's windsurfing. That's what ol' rich boys do."

A: "Yeah, he got rich off his wife. Probably wouldn't have made much for himself otherwise -- might have ended up being a liberal war-protesting college professor, or something."

B: Guffaw, Guffaw

A: "And his wife, you know, she's not even an American. She was born in Mozambique or something."

B: "She has a really bad attitude for someone who wants to be a president's wife. She needs to get herself in line."

A: "Yeah, she's like some kind of Stepford wife, or something. And these are the people who are going to keep us safe from these arabs. Kerry wants to negotiate. We don't negotiate. We just need to wipe all of these people out."

B. "The U.N.'s not gonna do it. That Coffee Anon is a piece of shit. None of these other countries care about this. It's up to us, and us alone."

A: "You said it, boy. And if the Democrats take our guns away, if they come over here, we'll have nothing to fight them with."

**********

So, if you needed to butt in on this conversation -- where would you start? First of all, they were talking LOUD in a coffee shop, and some other people looked like they wanted to punch their guts out. Are these people a lost cause? They either looked like farmers, or maybe retired farmers who moved to town or something. They're probably decent people. Stupid as fuck -- but decent. Are they all lost to us?

2. I would do the same thing i always do.....
"Excuse me....Kerry said he's gonna tax the hell out of us AND take away our guns? are you sure? I didn't hear that...where'd y'all hear it?"

and get there source formt hem, and then segue in to my corrections, without seeming like a kerry supporter, but like a murkin concerned wiht my rights and my paycheck. (and subtly set the record straight)

granted they would never listen to me, being female and all, but it's always fun keeping right-winger on their toes by forcing them to quote their sources.

3. Sadly it seems that they bought absolutely EVERY rw talking point
You would have to start by discrediting their source, which would most likely be some other farmer who listens to rush. Then it would mean refuting all they said, because if you left one thing unchallenged THAT would be their rationale for supporting *. The best advise is to ignore them and then go attempt to use your time in more meaningful ways, like trying to stop RW false talking points before they can reach the lips of these people.

10. That's what AMAZED me about it
It was like Marshall McLuhan, or whomever, right in front of my eyes.

Source: Republican Party
Message: Total Bullshit
Receiver: Raging dumbass who sucks it up

I think maybe some of these posters are right, and that you have to interrupt it, somehow, BEFORE it gets to the receiver -- or talk louder, I guess. But the GOP has already drug our national discourse down in in the mud, using ANGER and LOUDNESS to pipe their bull into the heads of the dull and gullible. It makes me thing that the louder things get, the more stupid they're going to get.

I usually use my "libertarian" persona to speak to these people, and then I ridicule them. "You think you like freedom, boy? Check me out you un-American traitor." It truly works (I actually do it with much more tact than that). And while it may not get them to vote for Kerry -- it certainly gets them thinking twice about King Dillhole and the GOP -- that's a start.

4. there's not enough time in the world
plus they'd turn it back on you. Make you the subject.

But maybe... Inject one point--say, that Bush is a rich man too? And how did he get so rich anyway? If you're going to take on the "hey I haven't made up my mind yet" persona, just keep hitting one point. "Yeah, but...what about that deal with the Texas Rangers? Where he got rich off of the taxpayers' paying for the stadium that reverted to the team he owned?"

In the act of "persuading" you, they might just have a light dawn on in their heads...

Teresa a stepford wife. Hell they need to see the movie. They are a lost cause. If you are not armed with * his self to say they are wrong I would let two old farts die without brains. They would probably shoot there self if they knew the truth.

7. Anyone else notice the glaring contradiction in this??
B: "She has a really bad attitude for someone who wants to be a president's wife. She needs to get herself in line."

A: "Yeah, she's like some kind of Stepford wife, or something.

Uhh...a Stepford wife *would* be right in line. What a couple of brain-dead morons.

9. How "decent" would they have been if a black man with a white wife...
...entered the diner.

I'll agree that they're "stupid as fuck", most bigots are.

Don't waste your time thinking they could be "redeemed", they can't.

Never entered their heads that the Bushies are worth more than John and Theresa put together, I'd bet. No.....Kerry is a "rich guy", Bumble-ya is just "Plain Folks"...

Don't waste your time. It's like giving a pig singing lessons: It's a huge waste of time and money, and just pisses off the pig...
