Kerry plan helps middle class build jobs, Edwards says
In Cleveland stop, VP candidate said Bush’s economic policies only help the wealthy
Wednesday, September 22, 2004
Mark Niquette
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
CLEVELAND — President Bush believes you help the economy and create jobs by putting more money in the pockets of rich people, while John Kerry believes you do that by strengthening and expanding the middle class. <snip>

"We should not be just rewarding wealth. That’s what George Bush and Dick Cheney are about," Edwards said during a question-and-answer session after a speech to the City Club of Cleveland. <snip>

The Democrats’ plan starts with closing tax loopholes that encourage companies to send jobs overseas and offering tax incentives to companies that hire workers in the United States, Edwards said.

Kerry and Edwards also propose additional tax breaks for the middle class and rolling back tax breaks for those making $200,000 or more to pay for health-care coverage and other programs. <snip>

1. Edwards should fine-tune this message. "Rewarding wealth"
doesn't really get the point accross.

The longer version is that bush is rewarding wealth with more wealth, without having to work for it. We should be rewarding work and effort with wealth. But the wealth created by people who are working hard, working two or three jobs, trying to pay off all their debts, and have a little money to buy things to meet a threshold of comfort, happiness and opportunity, is going to the wealthy.

People who work hard are not participating in the wealth they create. It's going to the wealthy.

So, somewhere between those two messages -- the long and the short version -- might be something that more people will appreciate.
