John Kerry: is there something he CAN'T do?
I just heard on AAR that Kerry is a pilot, and has been flying since age 16.

That man is truly, truly talented.

2. and last night on TDS.....
they had a segment about how Kerry saved a republican senators life sometime in the 1980s....is this guy Superman or what?

Last night I mentioned to my wife that when I compare my life to Kerry I have accomplished very little.....I truly admire Kerry and everything he has done with his life...war hero, prosecutor, child advocate, environmental advocate, help end the vietnam war even though it was not popular, US Senator, help our relationions with Vietnam, did much for the POW/MIA....the man is amazing!

Now compare this to simply little stupid arrogant Bush....HAHAHAHA!

5. Just heard that -- do you realize what this means?
It means John Kerry was more qualified for George Bush's Air National Guard position than George Bush was. (Normally, the Air Guard doesn't teach people how to fly, but they made an exception in Bush's case. )

Hope Kerry doesn't do any flying in small planes for the next few months, though...Just isn't worth the risk.

11. John Kerry is a Renaissance Man
He speaks at least four languages, in addition to all the other cool stuff mentioned here.

He's just comfortable in his body, if you know what I mean. He carries himself with such grace and élan, unusual for a man so tall and rangy.

Can't wait to see him in black tie dancing at the Inaugural Balls. Bet he does a mean foxtrot. . .

17. Went To See The Stones And The Dead At Fillmore West
When he was stationed in San Francisco before going off to Vietnam. Used to spend his spare time old-school surfing the waves. And, yes, managed to get a hold of a plane now and then to do some stunt flying - including looping the Golden Gate Bridge.

56. I got my copy of DeadBase right here....and it says that the Dead never
played a show with the Stones. By 69, the year that the Stones were touring the US for the first time since 1966, they probably would have been too big for the Fillmore West, anyways.

Not that I'm saying he's lying....things were pretty spacy back then, I guess.

32. There is the story he told , I read in a mag about how he was allowed to
fly over the Golan Heights. Told beautifully. He has an amazing spirit that embraces all that he touches and brings out the best in all that he involves himself in. Check out this article in American windsurfer Magazine about his 3 hour cross country windsurfing outings in middle age. It's a great article with pics.

http://www.americanwindsurfer.com/mag/back/issue5.5a.html

excerpt:

John Kerry waded upwind at the event Site in Hood River, Oregon. It was mid-afternoon and the Senator had been struggling with unfamiliar equipment in an unfamiliar territory since 9:00 AM. As far as the windsurfers on the Columbia River Gorge were concerned, Kerry was just another ordinary windsurfer trying to find balance in the shifting winds of the day. With him were Olympic champion Mike Gebhardt and Sam Grossman, a windsurfing friend who flew in with the Senator that morning. It takes an average windsurfer a day or two to acclimate themselves to the Gorge's extreme conditions. John Kerry did not have that luxury. Gebhardt, a three time Olympic Champion, sailed with the Senator all morning, barking instructions at him. Later in the afternoon, Gebhardt and I rested on the bank watching Kerry drag his equipment up wind for the umpteenth time- we marveled at the man's endurance. "You know, not many people from his position of power and wealth would put up with this kind of humiliation," said Gebhardt to me. "You really feel stupid having someone like me yelling instructions at you. It's degrading, you feel like a school kid . . .This sport is incredibly humbling and it's great to see a guy like that out there trying! Really impressive!" When we bade farewell that afternoon, Kerry's exuberance was unmistakable. With a youthful dragon-slayer's delight written all over his face, John Kerry made me feel like I'd just witnessed the best day of his life. However humbling or frustrating it may be, this man clearly thrives on challenges, has the capacity to endure, and can elevate his skills to match the foe.

44. I agree and there was a lot of untold snippets of his history ...
such as his actions after the Rodney King verdict. However, is it me or has this writer got the Watts riot of 1965 mixed up with the 1992 LA riot following the aquittal of the officers who beat King?

"The phone rang on a Sunday morning and it was John," said Bruce Droste, Kerry's friend. "He said, 'Get your suit on. We're going to church.' This was the Sunday after Rodney King's verdict and the Watts riot." An hour later, Kerry met Droste and they drove to the 12th Baptist Church, the heart of Boston's black community. "Why are we doing this?" asked Droste. "Because it's the right thing to do. People are hurting and I want to show my respect and support," replied Kerry. They were seated towards the front of a church whose only white parishioner was a man in the choir. Reverend Michael Haynes came over during the singing of a hymn, greeted Kerry and asked if he would like to address the congregation. Kerry declined and said he didn't come to speak but was there to show support. Still the Reverend insisted that it would be nice if he said a few words. Kerry asked when he should talk and the Reverend said, "After this hymn." "John had studied religion, so he grabbed the Bible, looked up a passage, reviewed the scripture, got up and proceeded to give a 10 minute sermonette. By the end I looked back and all the women in the row behind me had tears in their eyes," observed Droste. "It was incredibly moving!"

47. While not a windsurfer, I know that part of the Columbia River Gorge.
It's incredibly difficult and challenging for windsurfing and those who do are world class. Not only are the winds variable due to the geography surrounding the area, the currents at the confluence of the Hood River and the Columbia River create swells and chop that're incredible. It's not your San Francisco Bay kind of windsurfing - which is awesome enough. It's probably the topmost challenge for great windsurfers in the world.

49. The sport of a thousand falls
You keep trying until you've fallen off the damn board a thousand times and you just about have it figured out. And that's NOT in the Gorge where the adults play - the Gorge is wild with the wind blowing hard one way and the entire Colubia River flowing hard the other. If you can stay up and get around in the Gorge you're a pretty good rider. If you can do anything more agressive then just stay up and get around you're a freaking master of chaos.

Richard Ray - Jackson Hole, WY
(who used to live in Oregon and got trashed at Hood River too many times to want to recall)
