Bush Takes The Bait
<snip>
NOW KERRY CAN SPRING THE TRAP: "Voting to authorize force, to give a president the tools he needs to conduct diplomacy, is different from launching an attack and occupation of a country the size of California. This fits into a pattern of my opponent insulting your intelligence and thinking you won't know the difference. He counts deficit reduction votes and pro-middle-class measures as tax hikes, even though many in his own party approved of them. He says a vote which stood up for the middle-class was actually a vote against body armor. Mr. President, you have nothing to teach me about body armor. I wore it, and for real, not in make-believe.
Knowing everything I know now, would I have voted to place faith in an American president's diplomacy? I say yes. I'm running because THIS president has broken the faith, on a non-existent imminent threat, on non-existent links to Al Qaeda, on what it would take to win this war, on what this war is really all about. Here's the Kerry doctrine, and you can take it to the bank: Pre-emptive war is justifiable if it is TRULY pre-emptive. PRE-EMINENT WAR, BASED ON WISHFUL THINKING, IS NOT. Pre-eminent war is war that is not necessary, that creates more problems than it solves, and that is un-American and costs us the moral authority that we lead the world with. No, Mr. President, we do not need a permission slip to defend ourselves. But we do need to understand who the enemy is, and who he is not.
