61. Bush will have lower expectations again, but Kerry will win anyway
Bush "won" previous debates because everyone was surprised he didn't look like the total idiot he was portrayed to be. It's not that he said anything profound, he didn't have to! The expectations were so low, all he had to do was show up to do better than expectations, while Gore had to do better to meet his expectations.

Bush set us up, here, folks. He says he is the master of low expectations. He said people misunderestimate him. I'm not sure he is as stupid as he makes himself out to be. Perhaps it is all a folksy way of "relating to folks" while keeping his expectations, or misunerestimations, low.

I don't have much hope that the media will be fair in the debates. They will (like they did during the primary debates) totally ignore the issues discussed and go right in to discussing who "won" and....no surprise here....the bias is gonna be pro-Bush. Judy Woodruff will be in ecstacy fawning over Bush like always.....what can stop this?

But I see some hope here nonetheless. Kerry, as the challenger, does not have to "win" the debates on points (although he will). Kerry mainly has to look "presidential" and inspire trust. Right now, many folks are not that keen on Bush but they don't know enough about Kerry to feel comfortable with him as an alternative. If Kerry does well enough to make them comfortable with him, let them trust him...then Kerry wins....regardless of what the spin-meisters will say. It's as simple as that. People have to get to know Kerry enough to trust him as an alternative to Dipstick.

Judging from the past week, Kerry is going to do just fine.

100. This is the "Big Time" goddamit! This is for REAL!
There is no room for "low expectations" - from ANYBODY - but especially the idiot pResident we had forced upon us!

He's proven he's screwed everything up already! This is no "dress rehearsal".

How can ANYONE get away with even THINKING that let alone saying it aloud?!

I'm put in charge of a company, and I don't screw up as bad as I could and the building fails and many are killed - too bad - give me another chance? I don't think so! So how come this idiotic thinking is permitted for THE MOST POWERFUL POSITION ON EARTh?!

This make me so gaddamn mad - that is the main reason I'd NEVER give bunkerboy a psss on ANYTHING he could EVER do because of his miserable record of FAILURE where THOUSANDS DIED - DIED - not lost a few bucks, or lost a football game - FUCKING DIED - FOR LIES!

73. Bush will practice his answers for weeks ahead
The moderator can only ask certain questions, and Bush will receive
them in advance. Surely, no one would believe he is that spontaneous.
Since I won't be watching the worthless debates, I'll just have to take the "media's" word for it anyway, and then, on election day, I'll get to the polls as early as possible and cast my vote for my
president, JOHN KERRY  :dem:

95. That idiot, a debater?? Get real. Can't hit a curve ball.
This is where the town hall format comes in. I don't care how well he drills on that one. He's the original Triple-A power hitter of politics: he looks great in batting practice, but just throw him a curve and watch him screw himself into the ground with a huge, ugly-looking swipe that misses the ball, moves a lot of hot air, and ends with him flat on his face, knocked out by his own bat.

Which explains a lot of the mess we is in here now.

G.W. Bush???? God Lord, people, we'd be better off with G.W. Bailey!

10. you're right, he will
seriously, because Kerry will be held to a higher standard. If Bush gets through the debates without inadvertandly declaring war on Canada, he wins. Kerry has to explain the grand unified theory of everything and how it relates to Brown vs. Board of Education's effects on the international trade in Ghanian Goat Udders, while using only two syllable words. Bush just has to not look THAT stupid.

remember '00? Bush was declared the winner of the first debate, when anyone, and I mean Andrew Sullivan, George Will, even the conservatives, who watched it, thought he got trounced. But the liberal media picked up the spin that "bush had won" and there you go.

He did pretty good in the Democratic runoff debates - I'd even say he came out on top.

I'll agree that the idiot-in-chief is not going to be the pushover that his lack of intellect would suggest, but I'm not too worried overall.

If JK can manage to stand there & listen to the chimp without laughing out loud or giving heavy sighs (like President Gore did), he should come out ok.

Verily, without even uttering a single word, George W's noble bearing will suck the oxygen out of Kerry's lungs and have him flip-flopping on the floor with a big fish, gasping for air. It will be humiliating.

Prediction: bin Laden will phone up during the debates and surrender. The Iraqi insurgency will all simultaneously commit suicide. Tyrants around the planet will fall, and freedom will rise, and the people will rejoice.

98. I'll concede the point on the Oxford Debating Society - IF...
....you can offer me ironclad proof that someone didn't pave a four-lane highway for him to get in and line it with flower petals to boot. What has that asshole ever gotten in his life that someone else didn't giftwrap for him? Nothing. He hasn't earned jack. He's a failed businessman, period. Does anyone imagine Bush* would have been even a tenth as successful as, say, John Edwards, given the same starting line? No way.

The fact is, if his name had been George W. Smith, he'd probably be some jerkoff mid-level manager at some corporation, working in some out-of-the-way office where he could do as little harm as possible (assuming that little problem with the bottle wouldn't have gotten him ass-canned). Guys like him only succeed with backing, and where the backing ends, there also ends the advancement. He may have some intelligence, but he's far too intellectually lazy and far too prone to overconfidence to be a successful businessman. And he has this problem with reality.

In short - the Dictator Has No Clothes.

Poor George has mastered the art of using "just plain folks" sound-bites, whether or not they answer (or in fact have anything to do with) the question. He's not a skilled debater as such, but is a consummate purveyor of the NASCAR-level idiocy that passes for intellectual thought now. Given that the debates really aren't debates, in that the candidates can't question each other, he is perfectly capable of once again getting away with the canned sound bites while Kerry struggles with the complexity of real issues. Kerry is going to have to be really aggressive and sharp to win these. Let's hope he does!:nuke:

God's Other Begotten Son is verily the Philosopher King of all the ages, wise, kind and handsome. His words, though sweet as honey and of cunning craft, reveal profound truths. He will answer each question with wit and grace.

Kerry will only to be able to stand there, paralyzed with awe. His abundant hair will stand on end, and his teeth will chatter and shatter before the cameras as he comes face to face with our lord Dubya.

I predict that he, too, will succumb to the spell that all Americans feel -- the love and admiration of George W Bush that unites us all, rich and poor, Jew and gentile, terrorist and victim, dog and cat -- and will fall to his knees and humbly beg to kiss His holy ass and swear eternal fealty and offer all the sons and daughters of America for sacrifice unto Him.

Made a mockery of their Snap Crackle Pop argument. Turned them to mush in less than ten minutes.

Another time he convinced a pile of flour, some eggs and sugar that'd been left out on the counter to turn into a cake overnight - merely with the persuasive power of his words!

and the cake was delicious.

51. Chimpy sure didn't impress the UN
He's a broken record. He has about four sentences that he has been preprogramed to spew. He blows it out his hat.

In response to The National Intelligence Report predicting the BEST case in Iraq is "tenuous stability", worst case "civil war". His response was:

".. the Iraquis are defying the dire predictions of a lot of people by moving toward democracy. I'm pleased with the progress. It's hard because some in Iraq want to disprut the election and disrupt the march to democracy, which should speak to their fear of freedom."

The "dire predictions" are from his own National Intelligence annalysis, which he simply blew off.

Debate THIS point, Chimp: You are a fool.

52. I heard the UN was CAPTIVATED! by him, and aid is forthcoming
to Iraq from all countries. . .why apparently the King of France himself apologized for being recalcitrant about that whole invasion thing.

This convinces me even more that he is going to absolutely savage Kerry in the debates with his quickness and articulateness. Kerry is just not up to this.

54. What UN speech were YOU watching in WHAT parallel universe?
I watched it unedited on C-Span -- and every UN man jack of them were either on their feet wildly cheering his every word and gesture, or prostrate before him, humbly worshipping him and weeping with joy.

True -- some were paralyzed with sheer awe and had their pants full of poo and just sat there frozen, but only CBS Newss Dan Rather showed those.

79. Well, despite the jokes of others, I think Bush will "win" the debates
The media will act as though if Bush manages to simply walk on stage without falling, he will have "greatly exceeded expectations and carried himself well." They will also paint Kerry as mean and arrogant - basically using his intellect and grasp of the issues against him.

--Bush speaks the language of the majority of Americans: that language is uninformed, unaware, ignorant, cliche aggressive, bully-like, stubborn bullshit. The majority of America is under-educated and under-informed and unaware (and/or unconcerned) about it. This majority likes people that make them feel good about the ignorance, not people that remind them that they are ignorant. It takes a fellow ignoramus to do that. As stupid as this is, most Americans don't like the idea of being led by someone who is smarter than they are. :wtf:

--This ignorance manifests itself in attitudes that are bent toward arrogance - unilateralism, aggression, and preemption are all things that are fine to the arrogant and aggressive attitudes of a majority of Americans (small majority though it may be - I hope). There is a very large number of people who see everything in black and white - who literally think you are either "with us" or with the "terrorists" and we should, can and will kick your ass if you're not with us. God Bless America.

--For four years now, this administration has done a masterful job of keeping large numbers of the public - perhaps a majority - scared shitless. Willing to sacrifice liberties, democracy, justice and humanity in the name of things we are dishonestly told make us "safe." We have seen four years of the absolute and total exploitation of our nations wounds, and it works.

--Finally, I believe however totally wrong it is - the label of "flip-flopper is going to do Kerry in, and I think Bush will capitalize on it in the debates. Kerry will respond defensively, instead of counter-attacking, which will only make the label look like it fits even more (even though it doesn't) and I think that attack will be the main thing that does him in.

My thoughts,
Sel

the wrong thing and then they quickly say "Thank you" (but not for anything) to distract from the flub, and it works?

I wonder if Bush will stop his remarks in order to audibly pray in the middle of a question. I wouldn't put it past him to pull a stunt like that.

90. We should raise a stink about the format.
I don't know what the format will be or even when the debates are scheduled (I've been camping), but I know these will not be real debates. We should demand a REAL DEBATE.

It's a good way to get the focus away from Bush's win through lowered expectations or "likeability", and it's a real issue.
