My letter to my congressperson about health care reform

Dear _______________:

I am writing to you to encourage you to support President Obama in his efforts to reform health care and to eliminate the abusive, corrupt policies of the insurance companies. Although my husband and I have reasonably good health care coverage through our employers, we know very well that if we lost our jobs or worked for smaller companies we would be subject to the same predatory practices that victimize so many of our friends, relatives, and fellow Americans.

Personally, I'd be in favor of outright nationalizing the insurance companies and/or converting the lot of them into non-profits. It is immoral to make a profit from denying care to people and causing more suffering or even death. It *should* be illegal. And we all know now that industries, when left to their own devices, do not regulate themselves. The proof is around us every day. These companies have so abused the trust placed in them that they should have no right to make another dime of profit. They should be allowed to cover costs of operating and nothing more.

Please don't be discouraged by the haters and fanatics who have no idea what they're talking about. You're a Democrat. You're in the majority. This may be our only opportunity for decades to finally make a difference in the lives of millions.

Basically the same message as yours. Writing to your rep beats wringing your hands on DU.

And my guy is getting beat up pretty badly these days, so I figured a note from a fellow Dem would be a good thing. His district is like a dumbbell, politically -- lots of folks at both ends of the political spectrum and almost no moderates.

The senators from Georgia are a lost cause, but I'll probably write them anyway.

4. It felt like the right thing to do.

I sent a slightly reworded version to the two senators just now. I took out the bit about being a Democrat, 'cause they're not, and I also dropped the bit about supporting Obama. With a lot of these guys, it's a macho thing -- they have a really tough time supporting ANYTHING someone in the other party is for.
