Some inside scoop about Kerry-Bush race tightening in SC.
Evidently it's the MILITARY FAMILIES who are tipping the race AWAY from Bush.

There is some inside word that for the FIRST time, the National Guard failed to meet their minimum sign ups in SC of all places and guardsmen there
are failing to report for duty in record numbers.

2. A lot of Kool-Aid to get through to get to them though
Ultimately they need to see that Kerry would be the truly competent CiC.
Whatever happened to the U.S. abandoning its role as "policeman of the world"?
I'm sure a lot soldier's don't appreciate being used as "cops".

6. I have heard that the dems in SC have been
very aggressive in registering new voters this year. I am next door in NC, so some of their local news seeps through to me sometimes. I have heard that the dem senate candidate is very competitive this year, too. Wow!

7. Source for info?
I hate to be negative but I've yet to see any indication that the Repubs are even slightly weakening in SC.

There's been one Dem poll that indicates Inez T. might beat her Repub opponent but Bush losing the state is a pipedream.

I wish that it was true but there's no real reason to divert efforts and money from Ohio or Florida.

11. Noone said anything about diverting money.
The point is that Bush is in a 6 point race in SC when he should be at 55%.

The other point is that MILITARY FAMILIES are very unhappy and there are record number of failures to report from the state of SC.

How you came up with a call to divert funds is a mystery to me. Maybe you were responding to another post?

18. Sorry 'bout that... I guess that I saw the subject line below
about making Repubs divert their money.

Anyway, I'd put SC up against TX for the most Repub state in the nation.

20. I thought Utah was the most Repug?
I'll bet Chimpy gets a higher percentage in Utah than in SC or TX.

12. I say let them believe losing the state is a pipedream
and we may surprise them. Kerry launched his campaign there, so the personal weaving of that state into his campaign may be paying off.
Look at the Colorado/native son benefit.

17. And this in Ohio
http://www.dailykos.com/

And want more good news from the poll? Check this out:
Bush 48.6
Kerry 38.1

Sounds like weak numbers, until you learn that Bush won the district with 67 percent in 2000, and Dole with 55 percent in 1996.

14. Let's just divert some Republican resources
If Bush has to spend an afternoon in Charleston (or more likely at Hilton Head Island) in order to shore up a state that's supposed to be a lock, that's an afternoon that he doesn't spend in Florida or Ohio or Pennsylvania.

And if he doesn't go to South Carolina, have Edwards drop by to remind the faithful there that Bush hasn't seen fit to put them on his busy itinerary.

Can't hurt, might help.

Polls last time got some states really wrong and I suspect the same here.

19. That assumption ignores the greater guardsmen issue.
And, polls everywhere are weighted for the Republicans.

Why is it so difficult to believe that Dems are doing better than is being reported?

Why is it difficult to believe that guardsmen are NOT showing up for duty in record numbers?

21. you're absolutely right, blm
I couldn't believe my ears when I heard about the failure to report for duty of nearly 50% of guardsmen :wow: That speaks volumes. My husband has a lot of military folks in his dental practice and they HATE *. My husband will bring up the election and talk about how Bush has got to go and many nod vehemently in agreement. But others,CiC be damned, speak out against * independently without coaxing or apparent fear of reprisal. The worm is turning indeed ....

22. A dose of historical and numerical reality
South Carolina has trended at least 13% more Republican than the national average in each of the last four presidential elections. You would have to chop that in half, AND declare Kerry dead even nationally with Bush, for that 50-44 poll to even feign accuracy. Good luck. One optimistic thread regarding South Carolina is one too many.

South Carolina:
'88: Bush (61.50 - 37.58) = + 16.20% Republican
'92: Bush (48.02 - 39.88) = + 13.70% Republican
'96: Dole (49.79 - 43.96) = + 14.36% Republican
'00: Bush (56.84 - 40.90) = + 16.45% Republican

24. The original post is insight into the GUARDSMEN ISSUE.
Record numbers of FAILURES TO REPORT.

Military families make up a large percentage of voters in SC. It's not crazy to believe that these same people who aren't reporting are also not voting for Bush and neither are their families.
