The what DU is doing to elect John Kerry Thread
In Missouri Sen. Jean Carnahan (D) lost to Jim Talent (R) by a few thousand votes. We are told that this amounted to 3 votes per precinct.

Other than volunteering at the local headquarters, I decided to sponsor my precinct. I have called everyone in my precinct 3 times. From this I have identified independents and undecideds. I am going to write 3 of these individuals a letter every week, the first round goes out tomorrow.

I know that isn't much but I can't sit around and just watch.

This thread is for you to tell DU what you are doing to elect John Kerry. Hopefully, we can all get some ideas and some inspiration in these not so good polling times.

1. sounds like what you're doing I will be doing. Calling and door knocking
and phone banking the day before and day of election. It was very uplifting to volunteer. I don't have my list yet though. I also offered ride services if needed on election day.

3. I am doing this:
I am registering the homeless in my city which may amount to more than 500 extra votes...primarily democratic.

You can also set up tables at neighborhood stores, register inhabitants of halfway houses, go to local VA Hospitals and seek to register folks there.

Think of where you can get those who are sympathetic to the cause!!

8. Curious: How do you register the "homeless?"
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 09:35 PM by blondeatlast
They don't have addresses; which makes their registrations invalid, doesn't it?

Just curious...

Welcome to DU.

21. Depends on which state
In California, they can identify a street corner and register. Many agencies will allow them to use their address for mail otherwise they can't get the election materials. We've been registering at homeless shelters, at the prison when they are released, etc., etc.

13. Hi zapp, excellent work.
What type of id will the homeless need at the polls?

4. I'm willing to take suggestions
The problem is that I have Asperger's syndrome. I require a controlled, low-stimulus environment. I cannot interact with humans in real time. I cannot do anything that requires fast adaptability. (For instance, I can't have a driver's license because my nervous system does not permit me to receive sensory information, process it, and react to it fast enough to be safe on the road.) So canvassing and phoning are out.

I am, however, a wiz at research, a very proficient copyeditor, and a reasonably good writer. (I have in fact written an anti-Bush article I'm trying to get published, but I'm not having much luck. I suspect it only appeals to other Aspies. ^_^;;;) I am tops at repetitive, tedious tasks that require a close attention to detail.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

5. Funny you should mention Asperger's...
I'm an Asperger's case as well...but not nearly like yours. Still, I have issues adapting to new environments, and I'm extremely uncomfortable in social situations. Still, I'm well-read, well-informed, and like you I'm a pretty good writer.

10. WOW!
Another of my kind! I love it! (Haven't knowingly met any before, not even online. Only been diagnosed about nine months.)

So . . . got any ideas on how we help the Kerry campaign? Like I said, no one wants my article. (I haven't given up yet, but I really doubt it'll get published.)

15. Not sure
I know canvassing door-to-door and calling is out, though...not for us. Donations I guess are always good...I made my first to Kerry's campaign after I finally got some extra cash.

9. Write letters to swing state voters.
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 09:39 PM by blondeatlast
I've been doing that; I think MoveOn has a program.

I address and stamp between postings!

Edit: some possibilities for you:

(this is the organization I'm working with)

I'm coming up blank now otherwise; maybe others can fill in with some.

12. If you were in NC, I would put you to work sorting voter
registration forms and then mailing out voter info to the newly registered dems.

Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 09:25 PM by deadparrot
Being 17, there's little that I can do, but I've been volunteering for the Kerry HQ 2 hrs/wk calling undecided voters, seeing which way they're swinging, and offering them to send them info on K/E.

7. Every moment I am not at work
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 09:26 PM by Moonbeam_Starlight
I wear my big Kerry button that reads: "EDUCATOR FOR KERRY-EDWARDS 2004!" It provokes some good conversation because of the educator part.

I have a bright blue Kerry-Edwards bumper sticker right at eye level on the back window of my van. I drive ALL over the place because of my job and it gets a lot of publicity.

There are Kerry signs in my front windows (they would be stolen in the yard).

I have given money to his campaign, the DNC, and other groups that support him (moveon, true majority, this website, etc.).

I am a deputy voter registrar and have registered people to vote.

I have convinced many friends and family members and neighbors to vote Kerry.

We don't have an organization here in TX, per se, but I do everything I can.

I went out blockwalking for a Dem candidate for state house today (Austin) and ended up having a lot of good conversations with people who told me they are voting for Kerry!

If I could do more, I would. I have giant blisters on the tops and bottoms of my feet. It feels so good.

On edit, I have had three LTTEs printed in my local dailies (they are big). I also use Media Blaster and contact the media CONSTANTLY. I shoot for one session a day.

11. Registering voters, phone banks, canvassing, events
I'm lucky because my schedule gives me a lot of time off on weekdays so I can put in time for the campaign.

14. I'm willing to eat slugs if it will get votes for Kerry
Hopefully no one takes me up on that... although I'd probably do it. LOL!!

I'm a precinct captain, phone banker, ballot courier and general "whatever-in-the-hell-I-can-do-to-help-the-cause" volunteer.

Get ye buttocks down to ye local headquarters! It'll brighten your day!

20. working phones at local dem hq for Kerry and Senate Race
I am off on Friday afternoons from paying job, so I've committed every Friday from 2:00 pm until they send me home for the rest of the campaign.

Also signed up to drive people to vote on E day.

It does feel good to actually do something instead of just getting pissed at repubs.

24. I'm doing door-to-door stuff and data entry (m)
compiling a list of local Kerry voters so we can make sure they get to the polls on Nov. 2.

Plus we're giving money out of each pay check. The Kerry campaign is part of our budget. LOL
