Go to votingcatholic.org and take the quiz (send Catholic voters)
Votingcatholic.org is a fair-minded website which does an excellent job of illustrating that the Catholic Church is more than pro-life (in fact, "pro-life" is more than "anti-abortion" because Bush is probably the most anti-Catholic politician in America when it comes to the "anti-death penalty" aspect of "pro-life"). The Catholic Church is pro-worker's rights (including its strong advocacy for raising the minimum wage), anti-war (including strong opposition to the preemptive war in Iraq), and pro-social justice. There is a great quiz at votingcatholic.org that lets you vote your views on a set of issues and then grades your compatibility with Kerry, Bush, and the Church. The Church is much closer to Kerry than Bush on the vast majority of issues.

Go take the quiz, it's eye-opening.

7. Very interesting....
Except on the issue "promoting family lief" i.e., gay marriage, I am 50-70% in agree ment with the bishops...and 50-100% in DISagreement with Dubya! (I am in no measure in disagreement with Kerry--all agreements in the 20-50% range, near enough for government work, so to speak!)
Overall, agree with bishops 50%, with Kerr 32% and disagree with the Shrub 73%. I'll take that.

And I've been saying for years that "Catholic politics" are closer to the Democratic party than to the Repubs...

9. The Shrub campaign is targeting Catholics as swing voters.
I think this is a helpful message to get out.

15. I believe that the anti-death penalty stance
is largely the influence of John Paul II, who has very strong feelings on that point. I think that up into the 60's, the Church either didn't take a position or did not oppose the death penalty. I believe that future Popes will eventually become more liberal than he is on a variety of issues, but his views on the death penalty, war and social justice have probably made the Church even more 'liberal'.

"Do we not believe in Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace? Christians are becoming ever more united in their rejection of violence, every kind of violence, from wars to social injustice.

We are called to make ever greater efforts, so that it may be ever more apparent that religious considerations are not the real cause of current conflicts, even though, unfortunately, there is still a risk of religion being exploited for political and polemical purposes."

17. Their forum is a sad affair, however
It's only about a dozen people. All of them, with the exception of Socrates, spend a lot of time and effort justifying their obsession with abortion politics and why Kerry is a mortal sinner and Bush is a venial one.

And Cardinal Ratzinger is quoted ad nauseam.

Another sad note -- Socrates is the least able to argue of all of them. His rhetorical ability is poor and he occasionally comes off as a crank. Which is a shame, since the other posters are the real cranks, and Socrates is the only one who has a truly Christ-centered point of view. (I don't consider debating the finer points of canon law to marginalize ones' neighbors to be Christ-centered at all. Something about "whited sepulchres".)

This would be a good venue for progressive Catholics to make an impression. After all, the Roman Catholic faith is more than just abortion politics.
