Is the expression "Yobama" racist. *EDIT*
Edited on Fri Aug-28-09 09:37 PM by Deep13
Some guy on Facebook doesn't see why it is. I see it as a characterture of what ghetto-speak is supposed to sound like.

On edit: This was on a sign being held at of of these healthcare reform town meeting that read, "Yobama lies, Grandma dies."

2. Takeoff on Yo mama
A popular insult. It's been around for quite a while so maybe these idiots need some new material and not recylced early 90s shit.

I don't know if it's racist. It is pretty stupid.

3. Yes.
If that guy on Facebook doesn't understand that... well, he understands it perfectly. He's just being a jerk. No excuses.

4. No...
I think it's a generational thing.

Yomomma was a saying used when I was a kid and I'm Irish - so whiter than rice.

5. I love new slang. The Yo stuff is just new slang to me. Embrace it.

BTW, any new language that's developed over the past 40 years is new slang to me.

8. that's funny (40 years is new to me, ha!)
I dont think it's bad, it can be used to be bad, as in saying something rude to Obama on a poster. But, I saw pro Obama signs with it on it.

9. Yeah, it does sound strange when you're young (under 40). Once you
cross that milestone, time gets bundled differently.

Now get off my lawn, kid!!!

:hi:

10. The expression "Yo Mamma," has many MANY variations that are not race-based...
In Italian it's tu madre!

In Russian it's mat tvoi!

14. Maybe. But don't inner city guys (think Sylvester Stallone and Fonzi) say "Yo"?
"Yo" isn't exclusively a black thing, is it?

15. I'm not sure it is even a Black thing.
I'm suggesting that the man holding the poster THINKS it is a Black thing. One guy told me that his friend, a Cleveland cop (yeah, pretty tenuous) claims that Blacks downtown, elated by having a Black president, are rudely calling whites "honkey." I ask him if this suddenly became the 1970s. "Who the hell says 'honey' anymore?" I asked.
