HUGE scandal-HELMET-GATE!
Edited on Sat Aug-29-09 09:22 PM by jenmito
"Obama is pro-bike helmets, but does not wear one for family ride"

"President Obama took a bike ride with his family today in Aquinnah, on Martha’s Vineyard. The First Family cruised along Lobsterville Beach on a gorgeous sunny day but there was one glaring omission in an otherwise picture perfect tableau – the president was not wearing a bike helmet.

White House spokesman Bill Burton said he did not know why the president was not wearing a helmet because he generally does."

There's video evidence and EVERYTHING! (Notice Jake Tapper's smiling face next to the article?) :eyes:

6. It doesn't matter-he's a flip-flopper!
Helmet in one situation, no helmet in another. He should ALWAYS wear a helmet! The circumstances don't matter!

11. This kind of silly shit afflicts every president. Remember GHW Bush and broccoli?
That having been said, Obama should wear a helmet every-frakkin'-single-time he gets on a bike, because otherwise it will end up being the lead story that day.

21. Teah, by a few -- and on the "left" too, who reasonably pointed out that . . .
*everybody* looks dorky wearing a helmet. But, if he wears a helmet every time, the media'll have to think of something else to obsess about, and the chances are it'll be a bit more meaningful. It's the same as the smoking thing. If he gets caught (À la Martin Sheen in 'The West Wing') it becomes a big deal because the prez is supposed (in some "minds") to be a pargon of all virtues.

Let's not hand the tiny-minded anything they can actually handle, because sure as shootin', they'll mishandle it.

25. It also makes him a law-abider...
...(unlike his predecessor in so many ways). Massachusetts law requires those under 16 years of age to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle. Nonetheless, he made the girls wear them while still in Chicago, which has no such law as far as I know.

26. Who cares. He wasn't riding on the street.
Kids should always wear helmets, but adults can make their own decisions. I have never fallen off a bike since I learned to ride without training wheels. It doesn't mean I won't some day, but the odds are very low. If I was riding on a street, I would definitely wear a helmet. On a dirt path by the beach? No. Sorry helmet police.

38. I watched about
five minutes of this press briefing and heard this question. I couldn't believe someone asked about it, was it Jake Tapper that asked? If he ever loses his job at ABC maybe TMZ will be interested.

Other pressing questions asked included - "has he made any progress on those five books?" "what are his workouts like since being on vacation?" "can you tell us what type of basketball court he played on?" "can you tell us what the girls have been doing on vacation?"...

And that was about all I could tolerate. I will say that I think Bill Burton does a great job filling in for Gibbs. I love Gibbs, but I think at times he becomes the story. Burton really takes command of the room, he seems like a no nonsense guy and I think he'll eventually move up to press secretary.
